Brother INKvestment MFC-J4440DW

It's been a great addition to our setup! Prints are sharp and clear, and the ink system lasts ages, which is a big plus. Easy to use, reliable, and perfect for both home and small office use. Definitely a solid choice.

entire set of new cartridges and the print quality is still appalling. In short, this is not a well designed printer and the lure of cheap running costs have proven to be an illusion. We contacted Brother support and were given additional unclogging techniques, which used more ink, and which did not improve the print quality. The printer costs a little more than the set of genuine ink cartirdges, so its hardly worth wasting more ink or effort on a remedy. Sadly, this will end up as landfill.

followed all the fix it instructions on line to no avail (3 hours). Brother support approved me for a warranty repair (1 hour on the phone). I dropped it off at the repair show (30 minutes each way). I then waited three weeks to finally be told that the printer was irreparable and Brother had approved a replacement printer. So I picked up the new printer (30 minutes each way). Fingers crossed with the second printer.

All told, I have spent six hours of troubleshooting time and two hour of petrol consumption to be without a printer for 3 weeks, and then back at square one.

Maybe I am getting old and cranky, but my memory is that back in the old days of 2000, you had a Lexmark or a HP LaserJet and they just worked. Oh how I miss those days.

Do better Brother.

Printer has had issues of alignment and print head blocking. It’s been on standby and does auto cycling. Just replaced all ink cartridges and again not printing black. Did a head clean and it works for a week and stopped again.. Completely useless machine. Never purchase Brother ink printer again. Previous HP lasted for 15 years and this not even two. THIS IS THE WORST PRINTER i HAVE EVER OWNED. It drops off the wireless network at random and requires multiple searches to locate it and reconnect. itself and sounds like it's printing, I assumed it was cleaning print heads but apparently not. This machine has had only light use and has been a problem right from the start. I've used brother printers for the last 2o years but this is the last. Support from Brother is a joke and not even funny. Paper jams are a common occurrence for no apparent reason. I use good quality paper of the correct weight. I have updated the firmware as required.

Brother really needs to reconsider how they handle customer service, as they are falling far short of expectations.

improvement on my old Canon Pixma inkjet printer. Compact in size, similar to my old printer. Prints so fast (including double-sided), makes my old printer seem like a dinosaur. Ink cartridges are big and sold in individual colours (many printers have expensive multi-colour ink cartridges - when you run out of ONE colour, you have to replace the whole cartridge, wasting the remaining ink colours). The printer was easy to set up and connect to wireless WIFI, scanning documents is super easy, I can even print from my iPhone. There is one paper/photo tray that takes many different sizes of paper, up to 150 sheets max. As far as I know these printers are only available from Officeworks. I did not realise Brother is a Japanese brand, so that's a big tick. The printer also include a year's supply of ink cartridges, which makes the purchase even better value.

Cant use generic ink after a system update – No longer accepts generic ink after firmware update - Does "not detect ink volume" even though they are full. Factory reset does not work. BE WARNED this will occur across the entire Brother range. Make sure you switch off auto system updates before its too late. Bye Bye Brother. Show details

all print straight from their smart phones. I use it quite a bit for scanning documents, and the auto document feeder saves a lot of time. Have not had many paper jams. The startup speed and print speed is impressive. Would recommend - I'm really happy with this model of printer.

It was SO easy to set up and connect to all manner of devices - phones, ipads, computers... unbelievably simple! It wakes from sleep without having to go and manually wake it up like my old one. It's fast. It prints first time, every time. And it's less than half the price of my old useless doorstop of a printer. I love it so much!

prints very quickly without disruption from my laptop or (android) phone wirelessly and several family members have been able to print from their (apple) devices also. We did have a glitch when two people pressed print at the same time, everything paused but I removed queued documents and reset the printer, everything went smoothly after that. I have had no paper jams, everything starts up quickly even if there have been a few weeks between printing. In terms of scanning this is also straightforward as I can easily set-up a default folder on my laptop however I don't think you can autofeed for scanning (like I can on multifunction devices at work) so need to do this one page at a time. It is irritating but I happily accept this knowing that my printer is reliable at every other time. I am yet to resupply ink and although it seems expensive, it is affordable for inkjet cents/page and far cheaper overall than the $50 I forked out for HP every 30 pages or so. I have turned off software updates as I want the printer to work as is without Brother 'improving my printer experience' (I think this can code the printer for planned obsolescence or less ink uptake forcing me to purchase more). So far, so good. I am very happy considering printers are the bane of my existence.

with the brand. Was seduced by the no cartridge concept on the EPSON and I must say the initial loading of ink was super easy. However it failed to recognise that ink had been filled. Well done Officeworks for allowing me to exchange for another brand. The Brother does have 12 months worth of home usage ink and the cartridges have gotten much bigger. Scans easily. $4 difference in the price, with a scanner and fax, whereas the EPSON was a printer only.

manufacturers had introduced Eco Tank/Ink Tank options to their ranges since my last purchase in 2016. After comparing specifications and features along with the cost of replacement ink and how much printing I do, I decided to stick with Brother and bought the J4440DW from Officeworks for $295. The other contender was the Epson Eco Tank ET-2811, which Officeworks is selling for $395.

The two machines have a similar costs of $455 to $470 for the first two years of use if you factor in a set of replacement inks ($160 for the J4440DW or $75 for the ET-2811). The Epson will print more pages than the Brother for that money but the Brother has an automatic document feeder and supports duplex printing - neither of which is available with the Epson. The Brother is also fully controllable from the front LCD panel while an app is required to achieve the same result with the Epson.

On balance, I went for the Brother. If my print volumes stay low, I might even get more than two years printing from the initial set of INKvestment cartridges.

Setup was straightforward. It took about about 30 minutes for a full install, including the optional PaperPort software, connecting to a home Wi-Fi network and installing the J4440DW on all our connected devices (hint: use a stylus or pen to drive the LCD screen rather than your fingers).

Initial impressions are good. Print quality is high and print speed is much faster than the J4620DW. The printer footprint is compact and well-suited for home use or as a personal printer in an office setting. Scans can be managed from your laptop, which allows you to specify scan quality if the default setting doesn't meet your requirements.

The only downside to the J4440DW is the cost of replacement INKvestment cartridges. On a per page basis, the Brother cartridges costs about three times as much per page as the Epson ink tanks for black ($1.30 per 100 pages versus $0.42) or a whopping 10 times as much per page for color ($2.60 per 100 pages versus $0.26).

I can only hope that Brother respond to market pressure over the next couple of years and drop the price of replacement INKvestment cartridges while I use up the initial set...
