Whitsundays is the perfect tonic – We had an outstanding experience starting with the briefing by Turtle (aka Ryan) followed by a nice night in the Marina and we set off the next morning on our 5night charter. Regular schedules with Paul was always informative, helpful and entertaining. We had perfect weather, and great guidance for the best bays to be moored in due to conditions. We finished the trip with a quick and efficient debrief by Rylan. As a family it was our 7th trip and will continue to recommend Cumberland to anyone and everyone. Whitsundays never disappoints :)
Disastrous Yacht Charter – Booked 1 year ahead, flew to Airlie Beach to pick up yacht for 8 days. Arrived at yacht - sorry, the anchor windlass is not working. They tried to fix it, still not working, Checked out rest of boat, Anchor jammed hard in bow roller, took levers and a lot of kicking to free the anchor - they said that was normal ! Both Electric winches in cockpit intermittent. A/P switch intermittent. Cooktop no ignition. BBQ no ignition. They said use the gas lighters - no gas ! Water tank empty ! Saloon light switch not working. Unable to take for sail, so unable to note more unserviceable items. CANCELLED CHARTER. They said we were not competent to sail !!. I am a member at 3 yacht clubs in Sydney. Have been sailing for 30 years. My own yachts for last 20 years. I am also the COMMODORE at a yacht club in Sydney. I recently sailed from Southport to Sydney. They refunded the cost of the charter only. Disposed of $600 of provisions. I am out of pocket for $6000. Next year, I will sail my own yacht to Whitsundays. unbelievable !!
Your Bareboat Briefer is responsible for assessing the competency of charterers' boating skills and determining the safety of the charterer and their passengers, including the safe return of the vessel. It became apparent to your Briefer that you and your crew (of 2) were incapable of safely completing practical operations of the vessel which had the potential to cause injury to you and your crew, or damage to the vessel. It was therefore deemed necessary to cancel the charter.
Had the cancellation not been the case, you would have commenced your charter choosing anchorages that had moorings for you to use for the first couple of nights until your pre-planned visit to Hamilton Island where we had arranged for a new anchor winch to be fitted to the vessel for you to continue on with the rest of your charter.
We invited you to stay on board the boat in the marina for 2 nights free of charge, which gave you access to accommodation, fresh running water, private bathroom facilities on board the boat and marina, shore power for electricity to the boat, a galley with a 120L fridge, cooking utensils and functioning gas stove, cooktop and BBQ.
As another goodwill measure, we refunded you the entire charter fee of $6,330, and $784 for additional charges that you did not use and wrote a letter for you to claim any other unforeseen expenses from your travel insurance company.
There were no other reported issues with the vessel from the Briefer, yourself, or the maintenance team prior to, or after your use.
Cumberland Charter Yachts are of the view that this is a satisfactory and fair outcome.
