Intergrain Nature’s Timber Oil

the top board which is protected from the sunlight. The colour change from natural Cedar to almost black is not only disappointing, I have wasted a lot of money on both timber and Intergrain. I am confident my colour has gone due to sunlight because anything that is shaded has maintained a natural look. I have a small amount of Cedar inside and that has not turned black. I should have purchased a cheaper product and applied it more often to maintain my Cedar colour.

pad, and it soaked in very quickly. It was touch dry in about 20mins. There was no purple hazing or abnormal staining. The deck looked great. The next day I applied a second coat and that went on just as easy. I waited approximately 20 to 30 minutes and noticed there appeared to be some wet patches. I got an oates floor dry mop with a micro fibre head and swept the whole deck removing any oil which was pooling on the deck. I checked it again after about an hour and the deck was looking great. It had a consistent mat coverage which showed the grain of the timber and had dried without any tacky surfaces. The deck looks great. Its a slightly darker shade than original but I like it. Now to see how it holds up over time. I would recommend this product to anyone sealing a new deck.

Intergrain on cedar shed – I used the Intergrain Nature's Timber Oil on a cedar shed I recently made. 2 coats have brought out the beautiful colour variations in the cedar panelling... I have used this same oil for hard wood decking and love it. For me its not only a pleasure to use, but the finish and product longevity is excellent. I see why its the best in the market.

Too Yellow, feel exactly like Cabot's natural decking oil – Bought on July and just applied on front decking spotted gum, when open the lid, it's looks and feels exactly same as Cabot's natural decking oil, only except you can smell a bit of eucalypt's more than real oil smell. as Cabot's, I don't know about the 95% recycle, or other natural stuff on the intergrain oil, but I think it's waste of money if you apply on spotted gum, might be ok with dark color wood, i.e Merbau, Jarrah etc, but not really good for spotted gum, all beautiful spotted gum clean true color turn to really smoke yellowish, hopefully it'll last a bit longer than other decking oil, otherwise will be totally waste of money. At this stage, I think Wattyl weatherguard decking oil natural is best suit spotted gum, when you open lid, it's a bit reddish or a hint of pinkish color compare with total yellowish with Cabot's and Intergrain oil, this reddish or hint of pinkish seems best suit spotted gum from my point of view. I just bought 10L from Paint Spot, they are on 20% sale for all paint now till Dec 30th... really good value. There are too many decking oils, I only have time try these 3x type myself... if you have new spotted gum and you want to keep the really original color, I think Wattyl weatherguard decking oil natural (oil based) is the best so far. If you have old spotted gum, I think might be good to select slightly dark color, i.e Merbau oil might be last a bit longer.

Do not purchase – Unable to wipe excess off as it all soaked into the old wood. Purple hue left over the deck. I didn’t want a purple deck. I’m surprised this product is considered “the upper end” of the range. I now have to wait until it fades or re coat the deck with a different brand.

Best choice of oil based product! – Having just sanded back my 40m2 merbau deck after being disappointed by Intergrains Ultradeck requiring strict maintenance time lines I decided an oil based product was best. I coated twice and on the second coat removed the excess oil with a rag after 20minutes.

The deck will have a strong oil smell for a few days.

The deck will look very dark at first once applied but will lighten slightly after a day of drying.

Maintenance is as simple as cleaning the deck with a hose and brush and then putting 1 coat of oil on.

With an oil based oil you only need to recoat it if you let it go too long between maintenance costs. Whereas, with a water based oil it will begin to crack and peel if left too long and can’t be coated over without looking terrible.

Merbau on old Merbau - bad , on new - good – This was applied to a pre-coated 10 year old deck that had the ridges up as well as a 4 year deck that had not previously been coated with the smooth side up. I used along with pressure cleaning the deck three times prior to application.

Well, shock horror when applied there was a strong blue tinge nothing like the new Merbau. I contacted Intergrain and was told they had not heard of this happening before and that I should maybe rub it down with turps. That didn't help so they suggested that I return it for replacement which I did.

No different.

The blue fades quite a bit, though it does not disappear all together depending on the sun light angle on it.

The Merbau colour disappears altogether and the overall effect is a much darker timber.

It does make the timber repel water like it should though I don't think I would recommend it unless you were coating new Merbau as the older timber obviously can get a blue tinge to it from my experience.

Spin out – Hi we have a 36 sqm deck area and have just finished 2 coats of Intergrain timber oil and not happy, it has become very sticky even after 5-6 days left to rest. We used the Merbau on Merbau oil,did a pre wash with the appropriate product and did a gerni before and after. Patchy black stains still show up as well from previous water marks.??????.  Show details

of Intergrain. The quality of the oil is average and feel ripped off in paying more for this brand. I have spots all over the deck, all the grain imperfections show on the timber and it is too dark.

I would not recommend this product to anyone.

months, it was reapplied, as per the directions, after being prepped with Reviva. It wasn't quite the colour we had been chasing. When the timber was wet, it had beautiful reds and an amazing grain. After application of the natural timber oil, it went a brown / dark brown colour. We then used the natures timber oil in Jarrah, on Pacific Jarrah timber, and well, what can i say, except amazing!!! It has coloured the timber close to what it appears when wet, and the grain is very visible. On application, a strange blue / purple colour was evident on the surface, however, upon application of the second coat, this blue purple colour reappeared, but was buffed off within 30 mins of application with an old tea towel, basically polishing the timber. It is now smooth, lustrous and has a slight gloss. This particular colour and product is excellent, and fits our specific needs exactly. The great thing about the oil is the timber is able to be rejuvenated reasonable easy (some elbow grease required), as opposed to sanding in the event of a failure of the 'sealer' type water based oil. Couldn't be happier!!

Excellent natural finish – Extremely easy to apply with wool applicator and leaves a natural finish. deck which is in full sun and not covered. It needs to be applied thinly and the excess wiped away. Have been applying it every year and clean with Revive and pressure hose before applying. Because is soaks in there is no peeling.

Excellent product use on Bali furniture to keep it from cracking – I use this product on my Bali furniture and apply with a cloth and rub it into the wood no spots or drips just soaks right in. It enriches our Balinese furniture and no cracks. I apply it once a year before winter. Best product easy to apply. Well done Intergrain.  Show details ·  1

Too dark and and spotty – As in my question in the Q&A, first coat looked ok as it was applied. But has gone far too dark for my liking and also has a spotty appearance. I have previously used Wattyl weather guard oil based and found it great, but was highly recommended to use Intergrain NTO. Big mistake. Applied on merbau as per instructions and have done about 60sqm. Not happy. Will be sanding again and you can what I will use.  Show details

no sample pots of oil based decking oil at any store i went to. I took a wild shot in the dark ignoreded most of the reviews and went for 14lts of Natures timber oil in a Jarrah tint. The product was simple to apply and dried well and made the wood grain pop. On the second coat 2 days later it soaked in and left a blue oil film on the timber. I followed the instructions on the can and wiped off the excess oil (blue film) with an old beach towel and polished it back to a magnificent shine. I could not beleive how good it looks. The sun shines off like red brown glass.

Would recommend to anyone. don't forget to buff off the excess and make sure it does not dry in the sun before you buff the oil off.

Deck went a funny blue colour – Very, very unhappy with the results. Worse still, I purchased 10 litres. Small deck 1.2m x 2.m deck on the first coat looked like it had a strangeblue/purple tinge to the decking. Too scared to apply a second or third coat. Will be chasing my money back from Bunnings. professional job. Once completed then proceed to give another coat on the surface to complete the job. Yes the timber will come up darker than you might think but it just adds to the richness of the timber. No idea what some people are talking about being "orange'. If you didn't have a decent amount of tint you would be recoating the deck every couple of months or so....no one wants that! Great product Dulux and definitely will be highly recommending this product. The "Ultradeck" finish doesn't give the timber finish a natural look in my opinion and leaves it too glossy especially after several coats. Not to mention can be quite slippery when wet! NATURAL OIL every time for me :)

Want to oil your deck? Choose something else! – Laid new merbau in Dec last year. Weathered for 6 weeks to allow natural oils to leach out and applied Intergain Natural Oil as per recommendations, pre sanding, applied with lambswool applicator, looked great for about 6-9 months, now gone black. Don't know what went wrong? – I applied this 4 days ago (only requires 12 hours as per the tin) and had traffic on it for the first time last night. There is still an 'oil sheen' on the timber (metallic purple, like when you see oil on the road). Also, I moved my chair, with very low force, which scratched the coating off the surface... my deck. Surely it has dried and soaked in by now? I used the proper technique as per the tin. I also used power prep and revival gel accordingly too! Not sure what went wrong!

Gone Grey – I sanded my timber and coated it with Intergrain Nature's Timber Oil. It looked good until it dried and it now has a grey dull look about it. What went wrong? The oil is a couple of years old now, but it was stirred in well and it was fine the last time it was used, about a year ago.

Quality gone down hill – I used inter grain years ago and it was a good product. The oil had some viscosity like an oil should and it soaked in giving a deep luster. I recently purchased it after a 10 year break and the product has aviscosity like water. I would suspect the oil content to be less than 5% and probably the remainder mineral turpentine. so it looked like it had some oil inpregnation. At $97 for 4 litres I definitely won't be using it again. Ironically I went and bought the $18 can from Bunnings and it had the same characteristics, colour, viscosity and covering capacity. The Intergrain can says ' made and tested for Australian conditions' which is code for made in China I think. Probably all out of the same vat. Don't waste your money, look closely at products that actually tell u on a can the type and percentage of oil would be my advice. Sorry but it's definitely not like it used to be.

Didn't last – I followed all the instructions and applied Nature’s Timber Oil on my deck. It simply did not last. I couldn't believe it when the Dulux Technical team advised me that my deck may need a re-coat every 3 months due to the deck being fully exposed to the sun and rain. If Intergrain's product cannot last more than 3 months then I will be using another brand.
