Stihl GHE 105

A sub-standard garden shredder – The shredder clogs the input when trying to mulch soft material. This shredder blade bounces stalks back up the entry chute, or at least causes them to sit in the area above the blades, spinning or vibrating until more material is push in from above. Even then, this area gets loaded with leaves, small stems and soft stalks. The operator has to force the material into the chute, as the blades do not draw anything in. The OUTPUT of the shredder clogs easily when soft material is mulched. This means that the operator has to stop the machine and remove the cover to clear the clogged area. If this is not done, the motor will not restart after being turned off, and on again. Shredded material quickly builds up under the cowl at the bottom, meaning that this area too has to be cleared regularly. Stringy material can wrap around the U-shaped blade, making it much less effective. This machine will mulch/shred small branches and large twigs Ok, but as smaller foliage is fed in, the above problems start. This machine is quite frustrating, and slow, to use.

Superb electric shredder/mulcher for home garden use – I am in the process of doing a large garden renovation and as we live on acreage this is a fairly major job and I wanted to get a garden shredder/mulcher to reuse the material I removed from the garden. I have been a fan of the Stihl range of tools for some time so I looked at the options available and after some deliberation decided on the GHE 105 as it said it was designed for both hard and soft materials. Today I chopped out a Bird of Paradise plant (Strelitzia) which was to be the GHE 105's first test of soft material (the stems are very fleshy and wet) so I fired it up and put through stem after stem after stem without any issues at all until the outlet got a bit blocked (this was my fault as I hadn't moved the shredded debris out of the way) and had to clear the chute and blade area which is super easy to do.

The end result is a small pile of finely shredded material that will be reused as compost or put back into the garden as mulch.

Very happy with my purchase and if you are looking for a quality shredder/mulcher then take a look at the Stihl GHE 105. It isn't cheap but then again you do get what you pay for.
