Hills have lost a lifelong fan! – Hills Double Retracting Clotheslines used to be good quality and long lasting. Within 5 months of purchasing the latest one the securing lugs cracked and one broke off. Back to Bunnings!

Purchased in for $59.

Poor build quality - UPDATE Exchange given – I bought and installed the 30m Double Retracting Clothesline from Bunnings and like all other 1 star reviews on Bunnings website the plastic tabs on the bottom failed and snapped resulting in fraying of the cord. It’s completely useless. I contacted Hills and they said I needed to take it up with Bunnings but I lost the receipt and have changed banks so don’t have proof of purchase.

UPDATE: I contacted Hills again and they gave me a letter for an exchange. They said this was a known fault and that the newer versions have rectified. Fingers crossed!

The lines are far too weak for a normal washload and constantly sag. Not recommended – The line on my 20-year-old Topdry fixed clothes line needed replacing and buying a complete new wall mounted Hills Retracting Clothesline wasn't that much more expensive, even at Bunnings prices. It's quite small but looks sturdy and well made and comes with all the fittings you need, however none of them are stainless steel and so will quickly go rusty. The body is not metal but black plastic and made in China, and although it's an exterior model, doesn't say anywhere whether its all UV proofed. At least it has a galvanised pivoting mounting plate which works well. I bought the two line model and the lines can be pulled out either singly or doubled up using plastic wall clips, and so my configuration was 'M' shaped from the house wall to fence posts and back. I promptly set about catching up on my backlog of washing only to find that the lines stretched and sagged with heavy items like big towels and duvet covers. The lines themselves are actually only very thin PVC coated plastic cords, and despite tightening them up as far as they would go on the fixed anchor posts on the main unit, time after time I came home to find my clean washing dangling in the dirt. After two weeks of this I gave up and put some fresh line on the dependable Topdry. A waste of time and money then. Not recommended.
