with hers that I ended up buying one myself — just a different size and model. Since then, I’ve been recommending them to anyone who’ll listen. Honestly, once you try a proper dehumidifier, you won’t go back to those little damp-rid containers from the hardware store. The amount of water they collect is laughable compared to the litres a day you’ll get from a machine.

I first purchased the white AusClimate Cool Seasons 10L desiccant dehumidifier because I wanted something portable for bedrooms, bathrooms, the garage, and drying the odd load of laundry in wet weather. I regularly use it to dry out the bathroom during and after a shower and also like that it gives off a bit of warmth, so it can warm the bathroom up a little before a shower. If you set the timer and run it for a couple of hours after a shower not only will it dry out the shower recess and tiles, it will even dry your bath towels for you!!

I’d always planned to get an additional bigger compressor model for the larger open plan living areas (because compressor models don’t warm the air like desiccant ones, so they’re better for warmer climates) but in the meantime got by in Summer using the living room air conditioner’s “raindrop” dehumidifier setting .

So …. I was really happy to get the chance to test and keep the Large+ 45L compressor dehumidifier — now I have two options for all weather and room sizes!!

First impression: this model is big and heavy — my scales put it at 14.8 kg! Thankfully, it has wheels so you can easily roll it around on smooth floors like a spinner suitcase. Not so easy to move on carpet. Because of its large size it’s the kind of unit you pick a central spot (or two) for and leave it there. If you want to rotate through smaller rooms I would get a more compact and easy to pick up and carry model.

This size is perfect for daily use in open-plan areas like the living, dining, and kitchen spaces or larger bedrooms. Just keep an eye on moisture levels around houseplants and pet water bowls, as dehumidifiers can dry those out. I don’t have either, but I always remove reed diffusers before running a dehumidifier so they don’t evaporate too fast. Also the windows need to be closed whilst using. For this reason I don’t run the dehumidifier all day long as I like to open the windows and air out the house daily, even in Winter. When using, I regularly open all the cupboards and chests of drawers to give them a good drying out.

Understand that the tank doesn’t actually hold 45 litres but the machine is capable of extracting that much moisture from the air per day. When you first use it there will be an intense dry-down period where you are extracting large volumes of water from the rooms, walls and furnishings and cupboards. You will be shocked at the volumes of water it extracts and may have to empty the tank several times or use the drainage hose otherwise the machine will shut-off automatically when the tank is full. After this it is just daily use or every few days to maintain humidity levels and discourage mould and mildew. This model can connect to your smart devices so you can connect and monitor humidity levels remotely and have the option to programme in a schedule of when and how often you’d like to use it. I think this feature would be really handy for people that use dehumidifiers off site like in a storage shed or on a boat or caravan that is in storage.

I love that this dehumidifier displays the room’s humidity as soon as you turn it on, and lets you set a target humidity level for it to reach and maintain.

One of my favourite things about dehumidifiers is how they double as occasional clothes dryers — some even have a designated laundry mode.” My smaller Cool Seasons model has this, and it takes about 4–5 hours to dry a load on a clothes rack in a small room, with regular checks to rotate the clothes for even drying. I use it about once a week during Winter or wet weather. Because of its size, I expected this larger 45L model to dry clothes faster, but it didn’t — which surprised me. Also, the user manual was a bit confusing. It says “never use the appliance to dry clothes,” yet there’s a t-shirt icon on the electronic display (which I can only assume is laundry mode). The manual doesn’t mention this t-shirt mode at all, so that was puzzling.

The water tank is easy to slide out and empty, and the included drainage hose makes it simple to set up continuous drainage if you don’t want to keep emptying the tank.

Overall, I’m really happy with my AusClimate dehumidifiers. They’re from an Australian family-owned business and endorsed by Sensitive Choice. Their website is very helpful, explaining the difference between desiccant and compressor models, and they have a good range for all room sizes and climates. If this model isn’t right for you, I’m sure they have one that will be!

The unit was a welcome addition to an older 1970s house with poor insulation. We needed a Dehumidifier for the excess moisture we have in house due to lack of ventilation and insulation as well as Winter, we dry clothes inside, so this tended to lead to excess moisture overnight and the windows being wet to the touch. peeling and mold we had to clean every winter. We have had small units in past but this 35L unit was certainly more suited to our room size. Overall, the unit performs just as you need it too, amazing how much moisture you captured in such short time frames. Setup of the device was quite easy with the app and instructions and withing minutes you have it doing its thing. We have it set to come on for 2 hours early AM to prevent the windows from “crying” and leave on as we go to bed if washing has been hung to dry in the room. We are quite impressed by the unit and the app features, find using this the easiest way to control and schedule the unit. Considering if we now need a smaller one for the bathroom as it never seems to dry, so will certainly be looking at the Aus Climate range.

Pros • Easy setup out of the box • Generous water tank size • App support (via Wi-Fi) and great app that is easy to use and setup schedules and see the current humidity and temperature. • App and device alerts when tank is full • As a dehumidifier can’t go wrong, does what its intended to do, have noticed clothes dry a lot faster, has improved moisture content in home and led to less ‘damp’ • Unit is on wheels, easy to move around, generous power cord length and handle on top to left (don’t lift when full of water, heavy) • New grey colour is great, more modern look. Cons • Have had some issues with the Wi-Fi, device lost connectivity, need to re-add the unit back to app. So far best can tell once device is removed form power it can lose settings, but adding it back is not hard. • Seems to be no option to turn of the loud audible beep when the device turns off or off, scheduling this is great but if done when asleep, it can wake you up, would be good to be able to turn this off. • Controls on unit as not the best, ok for basics but for older people it may be hard to set the timer and settings, not everyone wants to use an app. • Tank when you empty can sometimes be hard to judge, would have been better with a pour spout built in.

the Bunnings desiccant style, but resulted in alot of wasted plastic and sometime forgetting about them.

I setup the dehumidifier into our camper and plugged the power in, after a downloading the app and setting the device up on wifi we were away.

It is set to run for 6 hours a day, every day. You can set the desired humidity level which whilst is really cool, I have no idea what level is best…

Over 2 months it has filled its integrated tank twice, that’s 24L of moisture pulled from the air. No more musty smells or worrying about canvas or mould.

You could also put it in the bathroom area and instead of using the tank, just let it free drain, but for the purpose os trialling, I stuck with the tank to see how effective it was. It gave me alerts on my phone when the tank was full each time, meaning I could just go and empty it, and turn it back on…

It’s a 10/10 for me, if you have a caravan or camper and have access to 240v internally, then this is the best bang for buck you will get for peace of mind over moisture damage.

simple question.

The dehumidifier arrived with a big scratch on the top (see photo), so I don’t know if I got a ‘scratch and dent’ damaged unit for testing, or if they just have bad quality control.

It’s a heavy unit at 14.2kg, but it’s on wheels with a handle on top that folds out of the way, so it’s reasonably easy to move around.

The unit is well built, and everything clicks into place nicely. When you turn the unit on and set the mode, a flap on the top opens and air flows out quite strongly. It has two fan speeds. The top has all the press buttons for operation, with a big clear display.

I read the manual before use and found the instructions were clear as mud. Example, it says there are two modes - auto or continuous - and on the display when you press the mode button there is a water drop symbol or a wet t-shirt symbol - but they don’t show what symbols are for what mode, so I had no idea what mode the unit was in for most of the time I tested it.

Ausclimate’s customer service is poor. To find out about the modes I called the Australian contact number at the end of the manual but it was disconnected. I went to the website and used the ‘contact us’ page on the 7th July but didn’t receive a response until 10 days later. The next day they sent a features and benefits brochure for their whole dehumidifier range, which has 2 pages of symbols and their meanings. These were more of a visual aid rather than anything to do with the symbols on the unit display.

After reading this brochure it appears that the t-shirt symbol is a clothes drying function, but that’s not mentioned anywhere in the actual instruction manual.

The unit can be used as it is or with Wi-Fi connectivity via a smartphone app or compatible smart assistant. I decided to use it without, as not everyone likes to have everything connected to their phone, or may not have Wi-Fi, and other testers have commented on the app already.

I have a weatherboard house in Tasmania built in the 1950s, and like most older houses there are limited power points. From the first use it became apparent that this unit needs a longer cord. The cord is 1.6m long but the manual says to keep a 1m clearance front and back. While that seems okay, in reality you have to position it around furniture, curtains etc.

It should not be used with power boards but it can be used with a “correctly specified, undamaged extension cord”. It doesn’t specify what correctly specified actually is, so I used the unit as is.

My house has double glazing and ducted air circulation (not ducted heating), installed to stop window condensation and the musty smells and mould issues they cause, a very common problem in Tasmania - it’s cold outside and we’ve got heaters or wood fires going all day. I don’t have those issues, so I was very interested to see what the dehumidifier would do. I tested the unit during winter in Tasmania, when the heat pump (reverse cycle air conditioner) was on 22 degrees from 6.30am - 10.30pm every day.

The unit was quiet. I used it in the lounge room, placed between the sofa and the TV (because of the short cord), and while I could hear the fan it wasn’t intrusive, so I didn’t need to turn up the TV volume.

I tested it in each bedroom, opening the wardrobe doors, opening curtains and pulling back the quilts, then shutting the bedroom door. I left the unit running continuously for 8 hours in each room, then checked the water tank indicator at the front of the unit. I was very surprised to see how much water was collected!

The tank was easy to empty by pulling it out from the front of the unit and carrying it by a handle on the top to pour the water down the sink. You don’t need to move the whole unit.

The unit has a 'swing control' so the flap on top of the dehumidifier opens and closes in a gentle swing motion. However, the instruction manual doesn’t explain what the swing function is for, so I guess it’s just for moving the air around. (The brochure I received later says the auto swing louvre spreads dry air more evenly across the room, great for drying clothes or dehumidifying large spaces.)

In the laundry and bathroom the results were much the same, but it was tricky to place the unit due to the short cord to get it 1m away from everything.

I use a clothes dryer in the laundry, so I didn’t test the dehumidifier when it was on as I’ve found fluff floats around and I didn’t want to clog the dehumidifier air filter, vents and grill. The instructions recommend these are regularly vacuumed and wiped down with a damp cloth as part of regular maintenance. It has to be turned off and completely cooled down before this can be done.

I would recommend this unit as it is very effective at removing water from the air, but the instructions and customer service are terrible, and for me it’s just another appliance that needs to be cleaned.

instructions first and it says, once received to make sure the item stays upright for at least an hour before starting it up.

It’s very stylish looking and easy to manoeuvre on our tiles but also our carpets when the water tank is not full. Thankfully most of our house is tiles.

I read how the machine is compatible with Amazon & google home via Wi-Fi, so that you can monitor levels, set schedules, receive alerts and adjust remotely but I am old school and hate all that technology talk so I am just doing it the old fashioned way of manually hitting the buttons myself.

I have had fun trying it out in our bedroom, bathroom and lounge room, not expecting to see much water in the tank as it’s quite cold up here lately and a friend of mine has one and she said, you will find it great when the humidity hits up here which won’t be long being in Queensland.

After just 5 hours in the loungeroom, I thought, let's see, expecting to see no water as it was a cold day and wow, it already had about 1.1 Litres of water, so I guess it works on any day.

As our house is only just over 4 years, we don’t have any Mould forming but we have had rain, and our hard cold tiles get very damp, and the dehumidifier certainly reduced the dampness in the house and on the tiles. I have tried it in the bathroom where Mould can start in there, I was surprised at the amount of liquid in the container, and I only put it on for 2 hours in there.

The water tank container takes a capacity of 4 Litres, and it is easy to know when the tank is full because the unit will stop automatically and the unit will beep 15 to alert that the water tank needs to be emptied.

I also save the water to pour over my plants outside.

What I do like is that you can turn the unit on to dry your clothes when the weather is a little wet outside. It’s not like a clothes dryer where hot heat is blowing on the clothes, but it dried some clothes that I wanted to see how it all worked. It’s not going to work like a clothes dryer where in 30 mins it will be all dry, it takes a good few hours, but it did work.

I like how the display panel is easy to read. The unit does have a bit of a noise but it’s not an annoying machine noise that bothers me that much.

The instruction booklet didn’t make much sense saying not to use an extension cord yet on the Read me first brochure it says an undamaged extension cord may be used with the appliance provided it is used in a safe manner. Bit confusing there but I won’t use one just in case.

I did read that you must keep all objects like curtains and materials at least 1 metre from the front, sides and rear of the appliance.

I like the idea of hearing that it removes up to 20 litres of moisture per day which reduces humidity and prevents mould growth. Bring on summer because I will be ready.

I haven’t had to do clean the filter yet, but it is easy to do.

All in all impressed with what I was seeing when I removed the water tank. Am looking forward to testing this machine out when the hot weather and humidity hit here.

Once you get to know the appliance and how it all works, it becomes simple to understand.

First picture is when I had it on for 5 hours to show how much water was made. Wasn't expecting so much water so impressive. Had to put a small floating sponge that would float so you could see the water level. The other picture is the water tank after 2 hours. The lighting and symbols on the top of the appliance are easy to read.

Editing: I forgot to mention that perhaps some hooks top and bottom on the back would be great so I can loop the electrical cord when not in use.

hour before I went to work and emptied the tank as I was leaving. There had to be about half a litre of water already in there! I had managed to get it connected to the internet and throughout the day, watched as it told me the tank was full, what humidity was in the house and how long till it turned off. We live in an 80's two storied house with minimal insulation and I was sick of the cold winters and heaters not doing the job. This is an absolute must purchase for the price. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
