Speedy in approving the claim (about three weeks), but absolutely appalling execution of repairs by their third party, Midcity Group. No communication, no project management. Repairs that should have taken a month will now take four months. So bad that I have asked NRMA not to make any progress payments without consulting me as I’m not happy! I’ve been an NRMA customer for 20+ years.
I asked NRMA to review their premium as I was getting half the premium for a better package elsewhere. Nothing but patronising comments. I then cancelled the policy. Guess what they sent? A cheque - who uses cheque in 2026. My bank (Macquarie) does not accept cheques. So back to NRMA. For doing me a favour of sending my money by a safer and… Read more

We have had a house fire more than 7 weeks ago. The only contact we have had except for rental assistance has been when we rang the company. I have been a customer of NRMA home insurance since 1988. Never made a claim til the January 2025 storm, when my boundary fence was blown over. The claim was accepted by NRMA. It is now April 2025 and I am told work will start after Easter…but I am not counting my chickens. Between January and now, I have been told a) the NRMA builder refuses to… Read more
do my job because my fence is a) ‘not compliant’, b) an OH&S risk, c) ‘shared’ (it is not a shared fence but a boundary fence). What they wanted was for me to take a cash settlement and find my own builder. Anyone out there tried to get a tradesman recently? For less money than it will cost to do? I said no. We went backwards and forwards with me having to prove my fence is on my boundary and not shared (and why this matters I do not know) even though NRMA’s own assessor took multiple pictures of my site and which are on file. Finally I said NRMA should supply another builder. NRMA’s first position was that this was impossible. They cannot tell their own builder what to do, I was told more than once. Like, REALLY? The multinational corporation is helpless in the face of a local building company? After NRMA caved on this another builder was sent to assess the work and quote. The NRMA failed to supply my contact details to this builder and so my agreement, sent to NRMA, never reached the builder…more delay.
The thing about the NRMA is that they do not read or respond to emails. NOTHING happens unless you call, sit on hold, yada yada, talk to yet another phone consultant who knows nothing about your claim and has not read anything on record. This has been my experience for three months. To add insult to injury, NRMA accepted my $750 excess, increased my premium by $21 a month and yesterday increased it again by another $10 a month, without explanation. I called to ask why, but the consultant told me she did not know why. I would not complain except my fence is STILL not repaired. All that money, every month, since 1988…..
Friends, it may be worth considering opening a bank account, diligently putting $150-200 a month in it, and, if the worst happens, paying for any damage yourself.
I understand that insurance is about a bet on risk. But when your insurer has ACCEPTED the one claim you have ever made, and STILL tries to get out of its responsibilities toward you, the loyal client suddenly in a very vulnerable position….this is deeply, deeply unfair.
Beware of the NRMA.

Big Changes to NRMA! Migration to a new system blamed for everything – Edit - **Update 11th May 2025** We received our home and contents renewal for our 2nd property and it also has jumped from $3218 to $4411. The Seniors insurance we moved too (see original post below), will be getting another new policy this year. Their price $2896.18 (Top Cover), and that includes accidental damage and Fusion of electrical items… Read more
too, AND we increased our rebuild cost by $180,000 and contents we added another $20,000 for their cheaper premium!! Wild! Some additional facts for you to consider: - NRMA cover nothing outside your house Eg: Garden shed ,trampoline, fencing, retaining walls. Seniors cover EVERYTHING within your boundary line , including the fences. - Seniors Insurance don’t charge you extra for individual, high priced items Eg: Diamond rings, Artwork, Collections, etc. You only have to notify Seniors of individual/ specific items and whether you have a valuation certificate for those items. - Solar Panels are NOT included on the NRMA policy - Seniors Insurance contact centre is here in Australia. Every time we called Seniors, the call is answered within 3 mins after using a simple directory. Reps are super friendly, thorough and can answer 99% of questions on the spot. **Last bit of info: A friend who was also with NRMA for 25 years swapped to Seniors as well for his car insurance. After only having his policy for 4 months with Seniors, he had his first ever car accident ($6k of damage), and his claim was handled promptly, efficiently and ‘no worries, we’ve got you’ attitude. They even called him straight away, when the claim was submitted online, just to see if he was okay, and that was before they even walked him through the steps of ‘where to from here’. The difference is like night n day. It’s a no brainer on why we are moving to a new company!
********************* Original post August 2024….
Issues encountered: - It’s mandatory that an insurance company provide you with your renewal at least 14 days before it is due. We received ours 4 days before renewal. - 27 years with NRMA, with 6 policies and it is now all for naught! No claim bonuses have been heavily modified, in a negative way, too. - 37% increase on my 2022 policy in 2023 renewal, and a further 22% increase this year! - I asked about flood coverage on my building and they didn’t know and just wanting to refer me to the PDS or blaming the ‘migration to a new system’. - Rang NRMA (website was down for 6 days) and the call centre has been moved overseas. I speak clear English and had to repeat my question several times, then had to clarify even further on my questions. I asked about the new debris removal and was told it’s included, then they turned around and said I’d have to pay for debris removal when the policy clearly states it is included. - Lots of coverage removed from our existing policy, blamed on the new system migration…again. - Received a quote elsewhere for people over 50, and given better coverage to a higher value with the same excess for over $700 cheaper.

peeling off houses, branches were down everywhere. We experienced the wind dislodging two tiles allowing rain to get into the roof space, dips appeared in the ceiling quickly followed by mould. It was the rainy season so needed the tiles fixed A.S.A.P. The N.R.M.A.said NO to fixing the roof unless we paid $1000 excess. We went private had the tiles replaced and paid $250. We took the insurance down to a flat strap basic policy, they call it an open door policy,no contents..Last year it was $1,400..this year it has gone up to $1,800.
I don’t know how they justify the ridiculous rise in pricing.

drive and I had recorded programs on it which I had not yet watched and could not record again from other sources.) I "did the right thing" (so I thought) and put in a claim with NRMA Home Insurance. I was asked a lot of questions, and told that I would be contacted by Revive Disaster Recovery which is associated with NRMA Home Insurance. Two people from that company came to my house, pretended to look at the freezer, and looked at the VCR and my computer. They gave me a paper to sign, and took away my home computer and the VCR. As they were driving off, I had a sinking feeling that this wasn't right. I waited to hear from them, and in the end I had to contact them to see what was happening with my property. They said they would be returning my property to me, and a few days later I got my computer back, but not the VCR. I asked them why not, and the people who brought back my computer had no knowledge of this device. I contacted both Revive Disaster Recovery and NRMA Home Insurance a number of times by phone, and was told I would not be getting the VCR back. They said it wasn't working and they had dumped it. They also said that, as none of my property had caught fire, they would not be paying my claim. I kept contacting them, wanting my property back, because legally it was still my property and they had no right to throw it away, even though it was not working. One woman from NRMA Home Insurance even told me over the phone that it was not worth her job to send back my property. So, basically they stole my property and would not pay my claim. I am still very angry about this, and soon after that I cancelled all my insurance policies with NRMA. I don't trust them one little bit. And of course, this happened during the time of COVID so there were restrictions on travel at that time, Revive Disaster Recovery had taken my property to their Unanderra premises and I was not allowed to drive that far to take back my property.
I also made official complaint to AFCA who were very good, very sympathetic and they contacted NRMA Home Insurance on my behalf for more details on why they did what they did.
My advice to anybody reading this: Don't trust NRMA Insurance, they will rip you off, steal your property and not pay your claim.
Follow-up · I didn't get a new computer, they returned my computer to me as it was still working. The freezer was not replaced by them. an online service system to fill in a claim form. I didn’t have a choice but to fill in the claim form on my mobile, with deep frustration and disappointment . I submitted the form with no anticipation of a prompt response. The surprise came after an hour. An NRMA Midcity Builders contacted me that an electrician will come to the house and make safe the electrical fixtures. This was followed by an assessor from Midcity Group who came and inspected the roof , identified the source of the issue and made minor adjustment to the tiles. The following day , a roof repair team came and made safe the roof. The make safe work arranged by Midcity was unbelievable, it was done in less than 24 hrs. Midcity Group requested I seal some roof tiles and secure the roof before they start the claim repairs to the bedroom ceiling. I took time to find a roof repair company as they were all extremely busy and very expensive. At last I managed to have one . They sealed and secured the roof. I Immediately informed Midcity , a repair team came and changed the damaged part of the ceiling, painted the entire ceiling and another company came and installed new roof insulation. During the entire process, NRMA claim Manager SEL was the watchful guardian throughout the process, contacting me on almost weekly basis and coordinating with Midcity and making sure I am satisfied and happy. She also waited till the entire work done and didn’t close the claim till I informed her that I am satisfied and I consider the claim is closed. SEL you are truly a life saver. You treated me like a father, and you were like a daughter to me . Thank you SEL, you are truly great and wonderful. Having said that, I thank Paul from Midcity Group , who was also kind, respectful and caring. Who made sure that the work is done to my satisfaction, and assigned a specialised company to install the roof insulation. Paul waited my decision and that I am satisfied before closing the claim . You were truly wonderful and caring. Thank you NRMA for having great genuine caring staff members like SEL and agents like Paul in Midcity Group .
Follow-up · Net total repair time 4 days including make safe of roof tiles and electricals , room ceiling repairs the sub contractor failed to install insulation so Midcity sent a specialist in ceiling and roof insulation . The online claim system was outstanding and response to the claim was remarkable. Repair quality was good despite of the insulation part from the subcontractor which Midcity has professionally resolved.
I want to thank Andrew for his assistance and explanations, his patience and clarity in updating our home insurance policy. She sacked my guys who were amazing and then did nothing to remedy the contaminated home. Today I have made calls to NRMA assessor, NRMA builder, NRMA claims all without any response to again say they are not going to pay for the contaminated floor coverings and furniture to be removed because we didn't have contents insurance but we were paying for home building plus and it is their responsibility to make the site safe. rejections, excuses and blame shifting to us. While we understand maintenance rules, the roof was not leaking prior to the storm and had been attended to by NRMA in a previous claim. They hit us with every excuse, including “foot traffic” as a cause of damage. They also blamed us for poor maintenance for damaged tiles but we proved they were identified in a previous storm claim and supposed to be fixed at the time by NRMA. They also ignored a report provided by an experienced roofing contractor and insulted him through the process. Our roof continued to leak, so 9 months in NRMA finally sent a builder to silicon the holes (even then the roof continued to leak) but they never sent an electrician to check the damaged light fittings and make it safe. NRMA showed no duty of care to us and failed to make our property safe after the storm. After we proved them wrong with previous NRMA insurance claim paperwork, photo and video evidence, they agreed to pay out $18,000 towards the claim as they acknowledged the damage was caused by the storm. Unfortunately we had to spend another $47,000 out of our pocket to repair the damage. They decided to pay us directly as their engineer said “our house could move up to 1mm per year” and therefore they could not life-time warranty the work. 1mm per year is well within any NSW building codes and no movement was identified in the engineer’s report. The engineer also identified moisture in our roof space and damage to the gyprock ceiling in multiple rooms. That was because his inspection was 9 months after the initial storm and our roof was leaking all that time. These were just more excuses by NRMA to weasel out of their obligations. I asked NRMA are they happy to lose a customer of 51 years – and their response was silence. Do not trust them with your hard earned money.

taken up significant amounts of my time. Just getting in contact with the responsible person is difficult. You are supposedly given a direct number, but the call nearly always goes through to someone else. Then you have to listen to a minute or two of recordings about NRMA, do an ID check, then wait for them to look for the right person, and after all that they normally say bad luck not available anyway. They have trouble with their phones and sometimes you cannot get through to anyone for a day or two.
The builders assigned to the work have not been any better. You might hope builders are smart enough to see at least a few of the problems in advance, but it has not worked out that way for me. NRMA says they will get their Relationship Manager to sort out the builders, but it has not made any notiecable difference.
If you have trouble with a NRMA claim I suggest you get your escalate through their complaint process early and progress to an AFCA complaint (still slow, but at least some help). It is probably also better to ask for a settlement, but that relies on NRMA preparing a proper scope of works and they have not been able to do that for my claim after all this time, even when I have pointed out the damage they missed.
The best way to sum up NRMA is - the exact opposite of HELP. You are on your own and will have to call the builders and claim managers to get them moving on your repairs. In the end you will probably have to settle on the claim and engage a builder to do the repairs on your own anyway.

When I was at Aussie seniors could always get through in minutes on the phone but as they jacked the prices up by $1000 I bailed on them.
