gathering detailed information and advised that the quote would be emailed to me after our conversation.

Three days later, I had still not received anything, so I followed up. To my disappointment, I was informed that there was no pending quote in the system and that I would need to provide all my details again if I wanted a quote.

The most frustrating part was the amount of time spent on the initial call, only to find out that no quote had been processed. I had even provided positive feedback in the survey based on the service during the call, but unfortunately the promised quote never arrived.

Simple, digital-first insurance with room to grow. After managing my home insurance with Everyday Insurance for the past year, I’ve found them to be… Read more

a solid choice for anyone who prioritizes simplicity and value over a 'high-touch' concierge experience.

What I love:

The Digital Experience: The online portal is arguably one of the best in the market. It’s clean, intuitive, and—most importantly—it works. I can access my Certificate of Currency or update my details in seconds without needing to navigate through endless menus.

Pricing: You’re paying for a streamlined product, and the premiums reflect that. It’s competitive, and I appreciate that I’m not paying for features or services I don't use.

Transparency: The Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) is refreshingly clear. I didn't feel like I needed a law degree to understand what I was and wasn't covered for, which builds immediate trust.

Where it could be better:

Support Accessibility: While the self-service tools are great, the few times I’ve needed to speak to a human, the wait times were a bit frustrating. If they can bring that human support speed up to match their digital speed, it would be a perfect service.

App Features: The mobile experience is currently just a window into the website. I’d love to see more 'active' features, like a digital inventory tool or a faster way to initiate a claim via the camera.

The Verdict: If you are tech-savvy, organized, and prefer to manage your policy on your own terms, Everyday Insurance is an excellent, no-fuss option. It’s reliable, transparent, and gets the job done without any unnecessary friction. I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a modern, straightforward approach to home protection.

contacted Apia to find out how to cancel the insurance. We were told it was best to ring back after settlement was finalised. We did that however we were then told nothing could be done until they received documents proving we had the authority to cancel the policy. Fair enough although we we had been paying the policy for over 12 months). If they had told us that on the earlier phone call we could have already sent the documents. Each time we tried to ascertain what documents were needed we were given different answers. We emailed power of attorney and were then told we needed to send the death certificate and the certificate of probate. We did that. We received an email back saying more information was needed. It was clear that the email and attachments we had sent to Apai hadnt been read or understood by the 'assisted digital specialist' because all of the information they were asking for had already been sent. We sent another email pointing out that the information had already been sent. Thankfully we had a different 'specialist' reply and they acknowleged that Apia did have all of the necessary information and the policy would be cancelled. We are now waiting on final confirmation of the cancellation and refund of last payment. (Hopefully that would happen in the next few days) The inconsistent information, the lack understanding of the law and basic compassion made cancelling the policy a much more stressing situation than it needed to be.

I have been a long-term Suncorp customer and have purchased multiple landlord insurance policies with Suncorp over many years. I have always paid my… Read more

premiums and rarely made claims. However, after recently making claims and experiencing how Suncorp handled them, I am extremely disappointed and have completely lost confidence in this product.

The first issue I experienced involved a shower leak at my property. The tenant did not notify me or my property manager about the issue. Instead, the tenant attempted to repair it without my knowledge or approval, which resulted in further damage. I had no opportunity to identify the problem early or arrange a proper repair.

Despite this, Suncorp advised that the damage was excluded under the policy and declined the claim. This was extremely frustrating because this is exactly the type of unexpected situation landlords purchase insurance to protect against. If a tenant’s actions result in damage becoming worse without the landlord even knowing, it is very disappointing to find that the insurance does not provide support.

The second issue involved a tenant who stopped paying rent and left the property during a fixed-term lease. My property manager acted quickly to find a replacement tenant and minimise the loss. However, because the rental loss period was less than four weeks, Suncorp advised that the rent loss was not covered.

I was extremely surprised by this limitation. As a landlord, rental loss after a tenant leaves is one of the main reasons for purchasing landlord insurance. If a professional property manager does their job well and reduces the loss period, it should not result in the landlord receiving no support at all.

I was also advised that rubbish left behind by the tenant and cleaning costs were not covered. These costs can be significant, and the landlord bond is often not enough to fully cover rubbish removal, professional cleaning and restoring the property.

After paying thousands of dollars in annual premiums, I have to ask: what exactly am I paying for?

What concerns me the most is that these important limitations are not clearly highlighted when customers purchase the policy. These are not minor details — they directly affect whether a landlord receives any benefit when something goes wrong.

Instead, customers are expected to find these restrictions buried inside lengthy PDF documents and Product Disclosure Statements. Suncorp’s response was that “the information is in the PDS” and customers should read it themselves. However, important exclusions and limitations should be clearly presented at the point of purchase so customers can make an informed decision about whether the product is suitable for them.

I also recently tried to cancel another Suncorp insurance policy shortly after discovering these issues, just a few days after the cooling-off period ended. I was disappointed that Suncorp still charged a significant amount of premium and treated this as simply the customer’s responsibility.

In my view, if a product contains important limitations that are not clearly communicated upfront, the responsibility should not simply be pushed back onto the customer. Customers deserve transparency and clear information before committing to an insurance product.

After many years as a loyal Suncorp customer, I no longer trust Suncorp Landlord Insurance and will be moving my policies elsewhere.

Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend Suncorp Landlord Insurance to other landlords.

claim with the RACQ over the phone. The building company's contractor was sent for an inspection by the RACQ. According to the report, the cyclone was the cause of the damage.

A couple of weeks later, the RACQ sent an Engineer to inspect the balcony ceiling. The report only mentioned the cracks of the walls but has not mentioned about the balcony ceiling damaged by the cyclone, according to the report.

After a few months, the RACQ rejected my claim and accepted the engineer's assessment. I filed an internal complaint with the RACQ, and the same outcome occurred: the complaint was rejected.

I then filed a complaint with the AFCA along with all the supporting documentation.

Many months later, the balcony ceiling started to fall apart as pieces came out of the cavity while I was waiting for the AFCA's decision.

It was taking nearly 9 months to receive the result from the AFCA. Finally, the RACQ accepted the claim that I had complained through the AFCA because I had enough evidence, which was difficult for the RACQ to get away with.

The RACQ is glad to receive your money each month, but when a customer makes a claim, they would prefer to save their money than accept it.

I have cancelled the home insurance policy with the RACQ to a different home insurance company.

the very next day. The issue has taken many phone calls and an official complaint but I finally got my money today, almost 3 months later. I put this down mainly to the initial staff member (who I checked in with multiple times) taking no action other than "I've emailed unclaimed moneys again". Neither he nor 'unclaimed money' department followed up with me in any way.

Later TIO staff I spoke to were helpful and the complaints person from Allianz was friendly. That said I'm a bit miffed that the Allianz compliant staff member said the long delay was due to me giving the wrong address. This could be addressed in minutes, months ago, by letting me know they needed my old address, rather than my current one. Pretty basic stuff given that I had already told them that the cheque had been lost due to it being sent to my old address where I lived in the Territory.

Apologies to the the staff that were friendly for the 1 star I but didn't get any indication that there would be any changes on their end going forward to avoid this happening again to other customers.

had MUCH lower premiums than other companies. My first premium for both home AND contents was under $400!! How they do that, I'm not sure so I was a bit unsure at first and read the policy very carefully. It looks ok to me in comparison to others and for the cover we need. Each year I've done another evaluation and they still come out on top. It sounds like the other reviewers on this site who actually have cover with Australian Unity (Calliden) have good experiences with claims as well, so hopefully if that time comes for me I will be equally satisfied. I did have a very long phone conversation yesterday to discuss the policy in detail and was extremely impressed by the Calliden representative. She was very friendly, well informed and never made me feel rushed.

The only company that was close to comparison in price was Cominsure (now the top canstar company) but they have very bad customer reviews. The only downside I can see so far is that they only have 1 excess for home and contents (so can't be less for contents)- but on the good side, you only pay the one excess even if your claim involves both. Now I'm just trying to get the most accurate estimate of building, demolition and architect costs so I can be sure we have the right amount of cover. Value for money, inexpensive, good customer service Only 1 excess for both home and contents

Man protecting small model house from falling dominos with his hand.

What's the difference between home insurance and contents insurance?

There are three main types of home insurance: building insurance which covers damage to building fixtures, contents insurance which covers your personal belongings and a combination of home and contents insurance which covers both. For homeowners who require both, it is usually cheaper to combine the policies and buy them as a bundle rather than separately, otherwise, you might end up paying two excesses for the same claim.

The excess is how much of the cost you will cover before the insurance company pays the rest. For instance, an excess of $100 will mean you will cover the first $100 of damage and the insurance company will cover the rest.

Home insurance

Home insurance covers physical structures and buildings in your home, including but not limited to garages, carports, outbuildings, gates and fences. This also includes any permanently attached fixtures like solar panels, walls, ceilings, and floor coverings for loss or damage caused by a range of insured events.

Contents insurance

Contents insurance can provide compensation for the loss of or damage to items in your home caused by insured events. These items include things like furniture, furnishings, clothing, unfixed electrical goods, jewellery, sporting equipment and appliances.

Types of content insurance

Content insurance is broken down into two main policy categories: policies that compensate for the value of your belongings and another type that replaces your possessions with new items, which is called new-for-old. This type of insurance is typically more expensive than the previous kind.

Value of your belongings

Some contents insurance policies will only cover the current value of your belongings, which naturally tend to depreciate over time. This means that the compensation you receive from your insurer in the event of a claim may not cover the cost of replacing your furnishings and you will have to pay the difference out of pocket.

Pros
Lower premiums than new-for-old policies.
Cons
The money you receive from the insurer may not adequately cover your loss.
May have to spend significant time trying to replace items at a lower cost than what you originally paid for to avoid being out of pocket.

New-for-old

On the flip side, a new-for-old policy will mean that your insurer covers the entire cost of replacing your damaged items with new items - even if they are retailing at a higher price now than they did originally. Naturally, the premium you pay for this insurance is higher than the other option.

Pros
Can protect from depreciation, as you receive an equivalent replacement for your item.
Can save time, as you don't need to go looking for an item for less than what you originally paid to avoid being out of pocket.
Cons
These policies have higher premiums.

Individual items

You can add certain valuable items to your insurance for an additional premium. This can cover items that can be used outside the home such as jewellery, sports equipment or camera, laptops and mobile phones. Unlike the normal plan, these items can be insured for accidental damages and loss.

Furthermore, this is a good option for when the item's replacement cost goes above the general limit on most plans. For example, an engagement ring or an invaluable piece of art may be worth more than the maximum insurance coverage on basic plans which means an individual content insurance plan may be the way to go.

What does home insurance cover and not cover?

Each insurance company is different, therefore you should always read the terms and conditions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully to avoid any misunderstandings and to get an outline of what the insurance covers. Included should also be details of any excess you may have to pay in the event of a claim.

While tempting to skip, it's extremely useful to read the PDS in detail before signing up for any insurance policy since it'll outline any exclusions that come with a chosen level of coverage. This will save you any nasty surprises later down the road.

You can get different levels of coverage plans from the same insurer. A basic 'defined events' policy will only cover your belongings damaged or lost through specific events.

Generally, insurable events include things such as:

  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Storm
  • Earthquake
  • Explosion
  • Impact damage (such as from a car or a falling tree)
  • Escape of water (such as from a burst pipe)
  • Vandalism and riot

Broader coverage plans can also accommodate for accidental damage or let you insure items that can be taken out of the home such as cameras, jewellery or sporting equipment.

Keep in mind that many home insurance policies come with exclusions as they may not cover intentional damage or loss, damage caused by vermin or blemishes due to general wear and tear. Contents insurance may not be valid for loss of property via theft if the house was not properly secured or if the thief was let into the property.

Since every home and its contents will be valued differently, you'll have to enter your specific details in order to get a quote.

Landlord insurance

On top of house insurance, there is such a thing as landlord insurance that covers potential damage to your property by tenants or covers the cost of rent in the case that your house becomes uninhabitable due to an insured event.

Renters insurance

Those renting in a shared house can choose to buy a policy with their housemates as long as all of their names are on the policy. Choosing a policy with a higher excess and paying annually instead of monthly will lower the cost of the overall premium.

Is it worth getting home and contents insurance?

The age-old question remains: is getting home and contents insurance actually worth it? That answer depends on numerous factors such as how much you've invested into your property and contents and if you live in a high-risk area.

Even if we feel that our house is unlikely to get damaged or broken into, life is unpredictable and it's always a good idea to think about how best to financially deal in the worst-case scenarios. Getting basic coverage is advisable for every homeowner so you are not left stranded with no house or possessions in the case of an insured event or natural disaster.

In terms of forking out money for extra coverage and lower excess costs, that depends on how smoothly you want your claims process to go in the event of a claim. What you are essentially paying for is peace of mind so that in the case that things do go wrong, you will be financially covered and the process will be efficient.

Here are some things you could consider when choosing whether taking out an insurance policy is right for you.

Value of your home

How much is your contents or house worth? Would you be able to cover the cost of repairs yourself in case things do go wrong? If you feel that you don't have a ton of valuables and live in a safe area, then it could be more cost-efficient to choose a plan with a high excess and low premium rate.

Vulnerability of your home

Do you live in a bushfire-prone area or somewhere with a higher crime rate? In this case, you might want to consider choosing a more comprehensive policy that will provide more security and a better return on investment in the long run.

Accidents do happen, and even though they're difficult to predict, having an existing home and contents insurance policy could save you a lot of future stress and money. Essentially, insurance policies are safety nets, and with the wide varieties of policies available, you can always pick a level of coverage that best suits your budget.

Factors to consider when buying home and contents insurance

Value for money

It could be useful to compare the different policies and quotes available to see which policy provides the best value for money for your specific needs. You can also read reviews to see how people rate a particular insurance company in this category.

Transparency

Another key factor you can scope out by reading trusted reviews is the transparency of your intended home insurance's policies.

Some companies may add sneaky charges or disclude common insured events in their PDS, preventing you from claiming the insurance when you need it.

Remember to read the policies carefully and speak to a representative for extra clarification should you require it. Be mindful to check for any exclusions and maximum claim limits.

Customer service

If you need to make a claim, you'll likely already be under pressure from the loss of your property or damage to your infrastructure. The last thing you need on top of that is stressful customer service. Paying a little extra for a company with a stellar customer service reputation is likely to reward you in time and energy down the road when asking queries or dealing with claims.

Claim resolution time

The claims resolution time is an important factor that contributes to overall customer satisfaction.

After a crisis, dealing with a company with a very slow resolution time can be frustrating and redundant. Read up on some reviews to see how long others had to wait for their compensation to come through. Some companies offer temporary living arrangements until they are able to fix your house as part of their policy.

Claim approval rate

The best way to find out whether an insurance company usually approves most of its claims is to read reviews. If a company consistently doesn't pay policyholders for claims when they should be according to the PDS, then it's likely to crop up in the reviews. This is valuable information that you won't see on their official websites or leaflets.
