My first gig turned out to be part of a feature film, which was completely unexpected and an amazing experience. The actor on set was really humble, and the production staff looked after everyone so well in every aspect. I learnt so much from the production team, the actors and the other extras on set.

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to get started in the industry, and I’m very much looking forward to the next role, no matter how small it may be.

I contacted MatchWorks because I wanted to use my NDIS funding, which has been allocated for employment supports, to assist me in returning to work. … Read more

My experience began badly. When I called head office, two staff members told me they had never heard of the NDIS. I was then transferred to a staff member who said they specialised in disability services, but they incorrectly advised that MatchWorks only supports people with a physical disability or mental health condition. As someone with a vision impairment, I found this response both concerning and disappointing.

After lodging a complaint, I was contacted by the Caboolture office and reassured that they understood the NDIS and were happy to support me. I decided to give MatchWorks a second chance.

Unfortunately, my appointment only reinforced my concerns. The consultant I was told was their 'best' staff member greeted me by the wrong name after looking at my appointment details on the computer. While anyone can make a mistake, it demonstrated a lack of preparation and attention to detail before even beginning the appointment.

What concerns me most is the overall pattern of poor disability awareness. From staff not knowing what the NDIS is, to being given incorrect information about who can access services, I was left with very little confidence that MatchWorks has the knowledge or competence expected of an organisation supporting people with disabilities.

People with disabilities have the right to be treated with dignity, respect and without discrimination. They should not have to educate disability employment providers about the NDIS or explain why their disability is 'eligible' for support.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend MatchWorks to anyone seeking disability employment assistance.

I would like to share my concern regarding the assessment process used for the Victorian Government Graduate Program. In my view, the assessment was… Read more

poorly designed and did not clearly reflect the real-world skills required for a graduate role in government. Some tasks focused on narrow and outdated skills, such as quickly detecting spelling errors or proofreading under pressure, rather than assessing broader capabilities such as communication, judgement, critical thinking, problem-solving, policy understanding, or professional decision-making.

I also found some of the instructions and information provided misleading or unclear, which made the process more stressful and less transparent for candidates. There was limited explanation of how each task was assessed, how results were weighted, or how individual performance was evaluated. This lack of transparency makes it difficult to understand whether the assessment process was fair and reliable.

It was concerning that some HOBAN recruitment communications appeared generic and insufficiently reviewed, including an email that began with “Dear [First Name]” instead of the candidate’s actual name. While the use of automated or AI-supported tools is now common in professional workplaces, this becomes problematic when candidates are assessed on language accuracy, proofreading, and error detection under strict time pressure.

This creates a clear inconsistency between the standard expected from candidates and the standard demonstrated in the recruitment process itself. In addition, some assessment instructions did not clearly align with the test process, which raises concerns about the professionalism, credibility, reliability, and fairness of HOBAN’s assessment design.

Overall, the assessment process appeared poorly designed, less transparent, and not fully reflective of fair or contemporary recruitment practice.

playing games with my future. Withholding information to see what would happen to me. I am new to this system, so the expectations that I would ask the 'right question' didn't end well for me (I'm sure he is okay although I am making a formal complaint). Poor communications created huge gaps in understanding and outcomes. I worked at Centrelink in the '90s. We were trained in para-phrasing to check understanding as a third step to effective communication. My coach didn't even deliver on the first step, to give me true and proper information. Different parts of Workskil Australia don't seem to talk to each other before separately reaching out to me. I've had to manage their internal work processes and unpack the confusion they've created. Thankfully I'm not too l long out of the workforce, I know I'm going to do better without them. Incompetent, corrupt and due for a major rehaul. Breaks my heart that some of society's most vulnerable are having to navigate this mess.

third time a Hays recruiter has contacted me after finding my CV on SEEK. They sound enthusiastic, tell me my experience is a great fit, ask if I'm interested in an opportunity... and then disappear.

No update. No email. No phone call. Nothing.

Please don't download my CV or contact me if you have no intention of seeing the process through. My time is just as valuable as yours.

I'm fortunate enough to have a job I genuinely enjoy, so I can move on. But what about the graduate looking for their first opportunity? The parent returning to the workforce? The person who has just been made redundant? A lack of communication can seriously affect someone's confidence.

So here's another question...

Do the companies you represent know this is how their potential employees are being treated? Every interaction reflects not only on Hays, but also on the businesses that trust you to represent their brand.

Communication is free. Courtesy takes less than a minute.

After three identical experiences, I can only assume this isn't an exception—it's the Hays recruitment process.
