2024 with installation organised through the store. What should have been a straightforward flooring job turned into a frustrating 16-month ordeal involving poor workmanship, damage to our newly renovated kitchen and walls, repeated attempts to resolve the problems, and ultimately court proceedings.

On the first day of installation, the flooring installation contractor that had been arranged by Harvey Norman did not turn up. Instead, two inexperienced young workers were sent to do the job. They cut the flooring directly on our uncovered new kitchen benchtop, scratched multiple newly installed kitchen cabinet doors, left piles of flooring offcuts around the house, and scratched and gouged our newly painted walls.

The flooring itself was also poorly installed. There were multiple areas with no expansion gaps at all, while in other areas the gaps were so large that they could not be covered by the skirting. There was glue residue in numerous places and multiple boards were cracked.

The flooring contractor turned up on the second day and completed the flooring, but did not rectify the problems that had already been identified. They also attempted to install the skirting but abandoned the job when it became apparent that the oversized gaps could not be properly covered and the joins could not be made neat.

What followed was months of back-and-forth. Both the flooring installation contractor and the proprietor of Harvey Norman O’Connor repeatedly downplayed the problems and maintained that the floor was essentially fine. Despite this, it ultimately took eleven trade attendances and more than 11 months before the flooring issues were finally resolved.

There were two major flooring repair processes. The second became necessary after debris was discovered underneath boards (left there from initial poor installation), which had contributed to further cracking of hybrid floorboards. There were also ongoing issues around paint touch-ups, kitchen repairs and replacement of damaged skirting. On more than one occasion, attempts were made to avoid responsibility for carrying out the necessary repairs.

Once the flooring issues had finally been resolved, it took another five months to resolve the issue of compensation.

After spending an enormous amount of our own time dealing with the problems, moving furniture repeatedly and accommodating tradespeople over many months, I initiated negotiations seeking reasonable compensation for the time, disruption and inconvenience involved.

The proprietor initially offered an amount that we considered completely inadequate and he also reversed a reimbursement relating to painting touch-ups. We were left with no practical option but to pursue the matter through the court process to seek compensation for the time and costs involved.

The matter ultimately settled, so I won't comment on the settlement amount or the specific legal outcome. However, the fact that it required this level of escalation after what should have been a routine flooring installation says everything about our experience.

Our experience was not simply that something went wrong with a flooring installation. Things can go wrong with any renovation. What was particularly disappointing was the prolonged failure to properly acknowledge, take responsibility for and resolve the problems.

I would strongly recommend anyone considering flooring through Harvey Norman O’Connor clarify exactly who will be carrying out the installation, what happens if the installation is defective, and who will take responsibility if damage is caused to other parts of the home.

My advice to anyone having flooring installed:

Before the work starts, take plenty of dated photos and/or video of your home — including the walls, skirting boards, door frames, kitchen cabinets, furniture and any other areas that could potentially be damaged during installation. It is much easier to prove what was there beforehand if something goes wrong.

Keep a written record of every phone call, email and interaction with Harvey Norman and the flooring contractors. Note the date, who you spoke to, what was discussed and what was promised. Also keep a record of how long you spend dealing with problems, arranging repairs, moving or replacing furniture, cleaning up damage and waiting for contractors to attend.

Keep all photos, invoices, receipts and correspondence together. Hopefully you will never need them — but if something does go badly wrong, having a clear record can make an enormous difference.

And don't assume that taking the matter further is impossibly difficult. In WA, consumer/trader disputes of up to $10,000 can generally be dealt with as a minor case in the Magistrates Court, where lawyers are generally not permitted for either side and the process is designed to be less formal.

My biggest piece of advice: document everything from day one.

the time of the appointment, I selected certain upgrades based on what was explained. However, after reviewing the documentation afterwards, I found multiple items had been recorded as upgrades without being clearly explained as separate chargeable components during the consultation.

This included confusion around the full-height tiling in the ensuite WC area compared to the approved plans, as well as additional upgrade items such as grout selections which were not clearly disclosed as extra costs at the time.

When I raised these issues, the response I received focused on charging a $400 administration fee to amend the selections, rather than addressing whether the items had been correctly explained and recorded in the first place.

In my view, the process lacked transparency in clearly distinguishing between standard inclusions and upgrade costs. This led to unnecessary confusion and follow-up disputes after the appointment.

Additionally, We had our selections appointment for our build and overall the process around the tiling selections felt unclear and not well managed from a customer perspective.

The tile selections were completed as the first stage of our appointment, however at that point the full scope of the kitchen design had not yet been finalised. As a result, it was not possible to fully understand the overall quantities and coordination between different areas at the time of selection.

When I later needed to revisit or adjust part of the selections after receiving updated information, I was advised that a $400 administration fee would apply, as it would require reopening an appointment and being treated as an additional selection session.

From a customer experience perspective, this felt unreasonable given that the overall design scope (such as kitchen planning) was still evolving at the time the initial selections were made.

It would have been much clearer if the process upfront explained how timing between different design stages affects selections, and when additional fees may apply, rather than raising this only at the point of adjustment.

Overall, the experience felt more transactional than supportive, and lacked flexibility given the staged nature of a new build process.

Approximately 70% of the boards contain black filler, giving the overall appearance of what I would consider a lower-grade or “rustic/CD-grade” product. The discrepancy between the showroom representation and the installed flooring is significant. The sample boards shown at the time of purchase did not accurately reflect the level of variation, defects or filler present in the supplied product. in the hall and master bedroom of my home. I am very unhappy with the installation and price.

During my first meeting with [Name Removed], I specifically asked for the floorboards in the hall to be laid FLUSH with the kitchen tiles where the two areas meet. I explained that the subfloor in the hall was raised in the centre and the height in the centre had to be lowered. I asked if the installer was qualified to modify the subfloor as required. [Name Removed] said it was not a problem, bragged about how wonderful and capable their installer is and said there would be no issue performing any work needed on the subfloor to make the two areas even.

Instead of modifying the subfloor as required, the installer just poured Sublevel into the corner near the kitchen and further raised the height. The floorboards were then installed on top of the Sublevel. Now the floorboards in the hall adjacent to the kitchen sit 10mm ABOVE the kitchen tiles. This looks TERRIBLE and is a trip hazard. No one discussed this with me until AFTER the work was done and it was too late. Neither Beare Flooring nor the installer care that this has been done or that I’m very unhappy with the result. ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS DOING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF WORK AND GETTING PAID AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

In early May 2026 I accepted [Name Removed]’s quote for 240mm width floorboards and paid the deposit. A week later [Name Removed] advised it would take two months for the floorboards to arrive.

I emailed [Name Removed] in early June 2026 about a possible installation date and did not receive a response. I emailed again at the end of July 2026 and [Name Removed] advised the 240mm floorboards were not available. I decided to take the same brand and colour of floorboards but in the 190mm width instead. Installation finally happened late August 2026.

There was no change to the brand, colour or quantity of floorboards, only the width changed from 240mm to 190mm. On the final bill, the cost of the floorboards was not reduced to account for the narrower, cheaper floorboards. I had to ask for the bill to be adjusted. No adjustment was made to the bill to compensate for the faulty installation. To add insult to injury, the original quote had a “discount” of $780 and on the final bill this “discount” was reduced to $660.

I have since found the same floorboards available in both 240mm AND 190mm width at two different, local supplies. Both are considerably cheaper than Beare Flooring (i.e. half the price of Beare Flooring) and offer an estimated delivery of only 3-7 days. The delivery rates are cheaper too. Beare Flooring obviously inflate the price of their floorboards to make more money.

Please avoid Beare Flooring. They do a terrible job, are dishonest, incompetent, overcharge and do not care about customer satisfaction!
