have gone to another provider. Unfortunately I only realised today that I have to specifically ask Southern Phone to terminate the service that they are withdrawing, or they would continue to charge me up until their arbitrarily imposed cessation date which is 6 week away. How egregious is that! Southern Phone used to be a cooperative, but once it was purchased by AGL, it just went downhill in terms of customer focus.

never received any communication that I still had an active account, and then had to jump through so many hoops to cancel my service that I haven't used in over 10 years. To then ask why I wanted to cancel despite me clearly explaining this in my original correspondence was infuriating. Their reason for no refund is 'they buy the internet data from Optus, so have to pass on that costs regardless of whether the data is used'. Every email correspondence had a different name that I was 'speaking to', at one point they even forgot to say they were for Blink and were another company! Glad to be done with them finally (hopefully!)

depths of awfulness. To be avoided at all costs.
We have an apartment in Thredbo, NSW. Thredbo does not have NBN or phone lines so wireless 5G is the only option. I looked at the Optus wireless 5G coverage map - which in retrospect was a mistake as it's the greatest work of fiction in the history of the world. But this coverage map told me that Thredbo had an Optus 5G tower just directly across from our apartment and that our area would receive very good 5G coverage.
Like a fool I went with Optus and had the 5G wireless modem delivered. The thing is the size of a 20kg lump of iron and about half as useful. We inserted the sim card a week ago and since then we have been getting download speeds of between 1Mbps and 3Mbps. It would be quicker to use a pigeon to send the messages. It can barely load a text-based webpage or even send a text-only email. It's like having dial-up in the 1990s but probably not even that good...
For context we can see the Optus tower from our window and have direct line of sight to it. I spoke to three separate Optus 'customer service' people - and I use that term pretty loosely by the way. One of them told me we were located 750m from the tower and it is in direct line of sight. The modem consistently says we have an 'excellent' connection. And the wonderful Optus app also tells me that the service is 'very good'. SpeedTest however tells me that the download speed is actually 1.36Mbps.
I've spent three nights talking to the Optus representatives and after being handed around like an unwanted moist towelette I was finally 'verified' and 'authorised' about 15 times. I filled in numerous 'online forms'. And I recounted a number of text message pin numbers. Finally, after about half an hour of messing around verifying myself each night I reached the nerve centre of the Optus Technical Support Area. These were the guys that knew the system inside out! These were the guys that would help turn this lump of cheap Optus cow dung into the pride of Silicon Valley and maybe - just maybe - enable me to send a short email from my laptop! I was literally quivering with excitement!
But alas each night having toiled for almost an hour with customer service authentications to get to this point the advice given to me was the same. Please reset the modem. That was it - the sum total of Optus' technical prowess. Press the reset button.
It goes without saying that this does nothing other than annoyingly make you have to reset your username and password on all of your connected devices. But it does nothing for you actual internet speeds. My dream of sending a short five word email to a friend was instantly crushed. The horror.
In one of his/her more lucid moments one of my 'customer service' friends said they could monitor the signal and would then get back to me the very next day at 5pm with more useful advice - yes they gave an exact time! I agreed and was hopeful that they too could see what I could see - that the Optus 5G service is about as fast as a tortoise with all four of its legs amputated at the waist.
But alas, Optus never did get back to me like they said they would. Just another failure in the Optus service chain. A tragedy of ongoing errors and screw ups. I was so disappointed as I'd been having such a whizzy jolly time talking to the customer service support team and wanted to reconnect at every opportunity! Oh well, c'est la vie mon ami.
All of the service agents were highly evasive about how to cancel my contract and return the modem. I wonder why? They'd seemed so keen to talk to me in the sales team previously! So strange!
And just to top things off when I did a speed test where I hotspotted my laptop to my telstra phone that uses the 5G signal from the very same tower as Optus it gave me a download speed of 95Mbps. So I can only assume that Optus keep forgetting to put money in the meter at the tower or Telstra have an elite hamster in their wheel and Optus only have the Phil Tufnell of hamsters sitting on the couch in theirs chain smoking tabs. Either way the optus signal from the same tower that Telstra use is almost 50 times worse. Blazing fast was I think the term they mentioned at sales...
To top it all off when I finally got someone to talk to about cancelling they tried to charge me $442 for returning their own useless modem to them. What an utter scam that is. They provided something that is providing a service that is magnitudes below what they guarantee. I even gave them three chances to try and help me improve it but each time they came up blank And to then have the temerity to somehow think they are going to charge me nigh on $500 just to return their useless junk to them. Optus you are literally having a giraffe...
One word. AVOID.

broadband" is beyond me. Whover owns or runs the actual infrastructure Foxtel resells needs to either spend the investment on upgrading or be put out of business. Dreadful speeds, CONSTANT dropouts, buffering issues, and in some instances total outages that can last over an hour. I'm also in a major city too. I live in a small unit, so I thought trying a wi-fi extender might help. Nope., Made zero difference. In fact, I think it might have made it worse. It's simply unacceptable, especially for the staggering monthly price thery charge.

again the customer service agent told me that I would have to pay for a modem that was offered to me free of charge. Sure they eventually checked this and found it was actually free but they were very quick to tell me that I owed over $400. Even worse is that I am also now sent emails telling me I will be charged over $400 for a free modem. I don't have another hour to waste while their inefficient staff stumble through the system. The initial offer was done verbally over the which is totally unprofessional and no terms were sent to me. I won't be back.

unusable speeds. I cannot even load a normal website with the connection. Usage prior to this included watching a few small videos watched on how to be a tourist and lots of searches "how to do this", "how to get to a location", "what do others think of location", etc. Used maybe 1-2Gb out of the 60Gb in the SIM package.
Tried to reset phone mobile settings to default, tried to restart phone, tried to switch to roaming on my Optus SIM and then back again. Followed their instructions to ensure APN configuration was right. Nada. The fact that it was working for a day and a half and then decided not to honour my use of the SIM suggests the issue lies with the Mobal Docomo network used.
Tried to reach out to their support and realised it takes them 2 business days to respond. Submitted the request anyway and got no response at all during my trip (2.5 weeks). Not even this day, 10+ days after I got home from Japan.
I tried to switch to SIM number 2 (backup) with its own data plan. Worked for abit and again, failed mid way through. Used about a fraction of the 60Gb promised/sold to me.
In the end, I paid for Optus daily roaming. $5 for 5Gb of data. Not too bad but can add up so be careful (30 days = 30 x $5 = $150 a month). I think Telstra only offers $5 for 1Gb of data.
Moral of the story: Do not buy Mobal SIMs. They may appear to be cheap when compared to others but their SIMs fail before you can make good use of it. You will never get your month worth.

Quite frankly, this is the only option available in order to prevent one from being Screwed continuously.

They assured me it wasn’t but couldn’t fix the issue. finally they gave into my demands sent me a brand new modem. plugged it in d#mn thing didn’t connect to the internet. for a week i was down. had to call many times finally someone managed to do a reset on their end and it worked. 2 weeks later no internet at all dead in the water. called vodafone they again tried to make out like it’s an issue on my end but it wasn’t as all my plugs and lines are new. they said someone would contact me when they were going to come and check the line to my building. no one called but 4 days later magically internet was back up. that lasted 5 days now internet is down again.
