we've paid $3.11 for power, excluding access and subscription costs, although even our access charge is 50c a day less than our previous provider. Took next to no time to hook up and then enjoying the benefits from the very next day. Amber support has been very responsive when i needed information to claim my BESS - VPP rebate. In saying that, if you have time and batteries and EVs and solar panels then manually controlling it is ok, but if you're after set and forget go with Origin or one that gives you high export prices in the evenings automatically!

battery system (FoxESS CQ6) paired with a H3-10.0 smart inverter, along with 11.9kWh of solar on the roof using a Sungrow SG10.0RT inverter. The inverters are coupled, and everything has integrated without any complications.
What I really like is the level of control you still have as the battery owner. You’re not locked out of anything, you can still manage how your battery is used, while also having their SmartShift technology working in the background. SmartShift optimises things on your behalf, including when to sell energy back to the grid, which helps maximise returns without needing to constantly monitor it.
Financially, it’s already been a noticeable improvement. In just 16 days I’ve built up $16.44 in credit. For comparison, over that same sort of period previously I would have been sitting around -$18. So it’s effectively been a $30+ swing in the right direction, which is a pretty remarkable turnaround.
Also worth noting there has been absolutely no disruption to my energy supply at all since connecting. Everything has run seamlessly, no issues, no outages, no complaints in that regard whatsoever.
From what I’ve seen, some of the more negative reviews seem to come down to setup or troubleshooting complexity in certain situations, and at times response times can be slower due to the high volume of battery uptake and support demand. In my view, it’s best to work through the setup carefully using the provided instructions first, and only reach out to Amber support if you’ve exhausted those steps and then wait for their response when they’re able to get back to you.

Costs zero from home, off peak home $1.50/100ks, public 30kw/hr about $4.60/100ks, fast charge 150kw/hour approx $12.40/100ks. So a larger battery and or charging at home during the night or middle of the day with Amber Electric saves heaps. We have only spent a total of $250 on public charging and only to top up minimum to get home. I have 8kwh solar and 28kwh battery. My power bills for the last 2 years have been ~$2700 in credit, as in I get money rather than have to pay. ~$35k however, I am confident that with the price of electricy consistently increasing, I won't ever regret investing in Solar Generation and Battery Storage, and in signing up with Amber Electricity. POSITIVES: I can easily control when I charge my batteries and when I discharge excess stored power to the grid. Since upgrading my Solar System I have never had an Electricity Bill where I am not in credit overall. My current credit with Amber is $121.17. I'm also expecting another negative for this month (March 2026). The Big Positive with Amber is the access to whole sale price of electricity with the average price I have paid for the last 12 months of 15.7c/kWh. Check your latest bill, without access to the wholesale price of electricity, you'll be getting charged ~40c/kWh.
THE 'NOT SO GOOD': 99% of activity on the Amber App for my Battery Charging and Discharging is done manually by me. I have been able to get into the habit of discharging power to the grid after 6:30pm when the sun has been shining. It takes about 5 minutes to do this and under normal conditions can provide $1 - $3 per day of income each day I discharge to the grid. This doesn't sound like a lot, but over a month it helps to offset the electricity supply charge and the Amber subscription cpost, particularly between late Spring and Early Autumn (When the days are warmest).
The NEGATIVE; The one charge on my electricity bills which I never fully understood, was the 'NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE'. In the past, this has had a devastating impact on the bill for the month. This charge and the impact it can have on my bill was never fully explained to me. In September 2025 the Network Demand Charge on my bill was ~$150. This resulted in all of the savings I had made over the month being wiped from my account. I am not the best person to explain this charge but it relates to the Maximum Power Demand you place on the grid when you are importing power from the grid. There could be any number of reasons why you may need to import from the grid when you have batteriess installed but if you understand the impact it can have on your bill, then you can make decisions on your usage and discharge behaviour to ensure this cost is minimised.
EXAMPLE: In September 2025, my 'NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE' was $150, this was based on the fact that I imported at a rate of 12.53kW for 'a short period' and was charged at the rate of $11.9333/kW for that period. On this occasion, I was charging my batteries from the grid while my hot water service was also using power. I imported 545kWh for that month but I was charged on the PEAK DEMAND amount for that month. Now I'm aware of the impact this has on my bill, I have changed my behaviour so that I do not import power from the grid AT ALL, if I can avoid it. This does reduce my potential earnings for the month however, my latest NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE for February was only $22.74 for a maximum peak demand of 2.11kW. On this occasion, the power import from the grid occurred during an evening when the batteries were exhausted and I needed to import power to supply the fridge, TV and other small appliances. My excess energy that was discharged into the grid for that same month earned me $88.37. A much better outcome.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: It has taken me quite some time to understand how best to manage my Solar Battery Charging and Discharging pattern but coupled with this, being able to manage our household power consumption has made my overall experience rewarding. My electricty bills, prior to installing Solar Panels and Batteries were between $600 - $800 per quarter ($2800 per year). I Know.... It looks like the payback period for the system will be more than 10 years but that's if electricty prices don't go up. My ongoing reward comes from being confident that, for the forseeable future, I may never get another electricity bill. I'm no expert, and these are my own words, based on my own experience. sun is shining) and overnight (when demand is low). The price is dramatically lower than any 'fixed-price' electricity retailer might offer. However, it is important to realise that in times of high demand, the spot price for electricity can sometimes jump to many times the normal level. For example, at its cheapest it might be 5c/kWh, but it can jump to $20/kWh or even higher at rare times.
If you do NOT have a battery, this means that your price for electricity can be crazy high just when you want to use your air conditioner or cook dinner. Amber might not be for you.
If you DO have a battery, then you will be doubly-rewarded. First, you can use the energy stored in your battery to avoid the high prices. This means your average cost of energy remains low. Secondly, Amber for Batteries offers you SmartShift, which can intelligently control your battery. In times of high prices, it will sell the energy from your battery into the grid, thus EARNING you money when the price is high. It also supports the grid, making it more green and more reliable.
A typical Amber customer with solar and a battery will have totally free power during the sunnier months and cheaper power during the darker months. In total, it is quite possible that you will have a zero bill for electricity for the year as a whole but this depends on the size of your solar and battery system, how much electricity you typically use and where you are located (eg QLD vs NSW vs VIC).
While Amber for Batteries is automated, you should still try to understand what is happening with your household energy consumption to fully take advantage of SmartShift. For example, in times of high prices, it is a good idea to turn off your power-hungry devices (eg air conditioner) so that you can earn money from the power rather than consuming it yourself. Solar households work best if the energy is consumed while the sun is shining, so adjust your household routines to use clothes washers, dishwashers and air conditioning while the sun shines. Also, Amber works well with Heat-Pump Hot Water systems since you can program them to heat water when energy is priced low (daytime, overnight) and avoid the expensive evening period.
Put simply, if you have Solar and a battery, use Amber. If you DO NOT have a battery, then Amber is typically not a good option unless you are very aware of how energy consumption works in your household and you are prepared to sometimes stop using electricity while prices are high.

Battery Optimiser Fails to Preserve Capacity: The algorithm completely fails to protect my battery during the active demand window (3 PM – 9 PM). SmartShift routinely triggers discharging events to the grid for negligible financial gains—like a measly 4¢ arbitrage margin (~$1.00 total gain)—which completely depletes my battery. This boneheaded move forces my home to draw from the grid during peak times, triggering substantial monthly peak demand charges that completely wipe out any minor daily export gains.
Complete Failure to Pre-Charge a 24kWh Battery: Despite having a massive 24kWh battery capacity and predictable household consumption patterns, the algorithm consistently fails to load and top up my battery ahead of the active demand window. Instead of intelligently securing cheap grid energy when it's sitting at 19¢ to ensure I draw zero grid energy during peak hours, it leaves the battery underprepared, further compounding the grid-draw penalties.
Robotic Support & Complete Lack of Math: When I raised these clear technical issues with detailed data, all of my observations were met with generic, script-like responses that felt like talking to a poorly programmed AI. Support completely failed to answer my direct questions. They insisted I am "better off" on this setup but utterly failed to show me the actual math to back up that claim. Meanwhile, my own math—and my actual energy bill—clearly proves that the SmartShift Battery Optimiser is making the wrong decisions. When finally cornered on the logic, support simply told me I was free to leave and change providers.
Overall Verdict: There is a total lack of accountability at Amber. Instead of receiving robotic, defensive explanations for an algorithm that is clearly failing, I would have vastly preferred an honest, human answer acknowledging these software flaws and confirming that they are actively working to fix them.

Here is why I found Amber unsuitable for my needs,

If you have an EV and home battery, I strongly recommend comparing dedicated EV plans rather than relying on wholesale models.
