Very flawed. You dont get payed for your feed in like you would think. feed in tariff is averaged over the month including the low or negative price when I do not allow any exporting there for my actual feed in tariff is allways low around 3c/KW which gives me a heaverly reduced credit amount. When it should be payed at the time of export price. Even though the use large figures in the hundreds to advertise what people potentially earn each month the system needed to achieve this would need to be massive. And there VPP will actual run up your bill by using grid power even though your batteries are full and not needing or wanting grid power. The whole solar tariff system is used not to benefit the customer by heaverly limiting how much you can export by restricting the output flow to what they want some times only alowing 3-4kw when system capability is much higher it is a government restricted with hidden cost that are accualy payed to the government on top of GST (double taxed)

battery system (FoxESS CQ6) paired with a H3-10.0 smart inverter, along with 11.9kWh of solar on the roof using a Sungrow SG10.0RT inverter. The inverters are coupled, and everything has integrated without any complications.
What I really like is the level of control you still have as the battery owner. You’re not locked out of anything, you can still manage how your battery is used, while also having their SmartShift technology working in the background. SmartShift optimises things on your behalf, including when to sell energy back to the grid, which helps maximise returns without needing to constantly monitor it.
Financially, it’s already been a noticeable improvement. In just 16 days I’ve built up $16.44 in credit. For comparison, over that same sort of period previously I would have been sitting around -$18. So it’s effectively been a $30+ swing in the right direction, which is a pretty remarkable turnaround.
Also worth noting there has been absolutely no disruption to my energy supply at all since connecting. Everything has run seamlessly, no issues, no outages, no complaints in that regard whatsoever.
From what I’ve seen, some of the more negative reviews seem to come down to setup or troubleshooting complexity in certain situations, and at times response times can be slower due to the high volume of battery uptake and support demand. In my view, it’s best to work through the setup carefully using the provided instructions first, and only reach out to Amber support if you’ve exhausted those steps and then wait for their response when they’re able to get back to you.

Costs zero from home, off peak home $1.50/100ks, public 30kw/hr about $4.60/100ks, fast charge 150kw/hour approx $12.40/100ks. So a larger battery and or charging at home during the night or middle of the day with Amber Electric saves heaps. We have only spent a total of $250 on public charging and only to top up minimum to get home. I have 8kwh solar and 28kwh battery. My power bills for the last 2 years have been ~$2700 in credit, as in I get money rather than have to pay. I dont need to be super fiddly with the settings, although I do keep an eye on it atleast once a day. But Amber app will automate my power optimisation in case I forget. Show details

~$35k however, I am confident that with the price of electricy consistently increasing, I won't ever regret investing in Solar Generation and Battery Storage, and in signing up with Amber Electricity. POSITIVES: I can easily control when I charge my batteries and when I discharge excess stored power to the grid. Since upgrading my Solar System I have never had an Electricity Bill where I am not in credit overall. My current credit with Amber is $121.17. I'm also expecting another negative for this month (March 2026). The Big Positive with Amber is the access to whole sale price of electricity with the average price I have paid for the last 12 months of 15.7c/kWh. Check your latest bill, without access to the wholesale price of electricity, you'll be getting charged ~40c/kWh.
THE 'NOT SO GOOD': 99% of activity on the Amber App for my Battery Charging and Discharging is done manually by me. I have been able to get into the habit of discharging power to the grid after 6:30pm when the sun has been shining. It takes about 5 minutes to do this and under normal conditions can provide $1 - $3 per day of income each day I discharge to the grid. This doesn't sound like a lot, but over a month it helps to offset the electricity supply charge and the Amber subscription cpost, particularly between late Spring and Early Autumn (When the days are warmest).
The NEGATIVE; The one charge on my electricity bills which I never fully understood, was the 'NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE'. In the past, this has had a devastating impact on the bill for the month. This charge and the impact it can have on my bill was never fully explained to me. In September 2025 the Network Demand Charge on my bill was ~$150. This resulted in all of the savings I had made over the month being wiped from my account. I am not the best person to explain this charge but it relates to the Maximum Power Demand you place on the grid when you are importing power from the grid. There could be any number of reasons why you may need to import from the grid when you have batteriess installed but if you understand the impact it can have on your bill, then you can make decisions on your usage and discharge behaviour to ensure this cost is minimised.
EXAMPLE: In September 2025, my 'NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE' was $150, this was based on the fact that I imported at a rate of 12.53kW for 'a short period' and was charged at the rate of $11.9333/kW for that period. On this occasion, I was charging my batteries from the grid while my hot water service was also using power. I imported 545kWh for that month but I was charged on the PEAK DEMAND amount for that month. Now I'm aware of the impact this has on my bill, I have changed my behaviour so that I do not import power from the grid AT ALL, if I can avoid it. This does reduce my potential earnings for the month however, my latest NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE for February was only $22.74 for a maximum peak demand of 2.11kW. On this occasion, the power import from the grid occurred during an evening when the batteries were exhausted and I needed to import power to supply the fridge, TV and other small appliances. My excess energy that was discharged into the grid for that same month earned me $88.37. A much better outcome.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE: It has taken me quite some time to understand how best to manage my Solar Battery Charging and Discharging pattern but coupled with this, being able to manage our household power consumption has made my overall experience rewarding. My electricty bills, prior to installing Solar Panels and Batteries were between $600 - $800 per quarter ($2800 per year). I Know.... It looks like the payback period for the system will be more than 10 years but that's if electricty prices don't go up. My ongoing reward comes from being confident that, for the forseeable future, I may never get another electricity bill. I'm no expert, and these are my own words, based on my own experience. I hope this helps you make your decision to get a Solar Panel Battery system installed and sign up with Amber. P.S. I wasn't able to upload photos because Google limits my upload options.

by and they've done nothing. Plus inverter comms is not good enough for the smartswitch to work properly, even hard wired with ethernet to the NBN. They were stealing my battery power in the evening spike, making me import at a high price, then not topping up the battery when prices were low. The automation is very unreliable and doesn't work.

I thing the number is far greater due to the fact they ask you to review company as soon as you join, prior to finding out that your issues are your problem and trying to contact them takes days and then it starts. conserving it when a price hike is expected, etc, etc, etc... There are tons of documents on their website that paint a nice picture. And there are people on the internet who say they are hundreds of dollars in credit.
So, I connected to Amber and spent around 6 months with them. I have a 6.5 kW solar panel setup with a quite old 5 kW inverter that is not capable of curtailing, and a brand new 50 kWh battery. The water is heated by gas and food preparation is gas also. Also, I work from home and sometimes my wife works from home. This means that in the summer I have to use AC to cool down the house during the day, and in the winter on some days to heat the house during the day. During the winter we almost always turn on the AC in the morning (I am frost tolerant, but not the wife and kids) and on some cold evenings we turn AC on also. The expectation, fuelled by ads, was to reach $0 or near $0 electricity bill and even have some credits. Then spend the earned credits to pay for gas. 6 months with Amber has proven that this was a completely wrong expectation.
Amber sells and buys energy using wholesale prices. This means that depending on the current situation the energy can be very cheap or very expensive.
When the sun shines and the wind blows the grid is full of energy and it becomes cheaper and even negative. E.g. it is even possible that you will be paid when you use energy. However, the same is true for selling the energy to the grid. The FiT price may become negative, meaning that when energy is exported to the grid, you pay. If the inverter supports curtailing (mine doesn't) then it will simply stop exporting energy. If the inverter doesn't support curtailing, then on sunny days with full battery you will pay for exporting energy to the grid.
When there is no sun and no wind, which occasionally happens, the price of energy rises for both export and import. The battery will of course support the house, but it can do it for a limited time. These events are happening typically during a heatwave or during cold winters, meaning energy expenses will be high - AC is the main consumer, everything else is negligible.
Then Amber slaps a supply charge and their own fee roughly $1.90 per day in total. This means that in order to be at $0 or in any kind of credit I needed to sell electricity for at least ~$60 per month. This can happen in two ways. First, there is excess of energy to sell when it is relatively expensive. Second, Amber's SmartShift software is smart enough to predict these high prices and buy the energy well enough to sell it later. None of this happens with Amber actually.
The harsh reality of the wholesale market and energy use is when the energy is expensive in the grid I normally need it too. When the energy is cheap I normally don't need it.
Hot summer. The solar system energy production is at max. However, most of it is eaten by the AC during the day and little of it remains for sale in the evening, if it is not already used by AC. The FiT price is low so the leftover I have after AC doesn't earn anything really. If we add a couple of weeks of heatwave in the mid-summer, then sometimes I need to run AC during the night, which leaves even less energy to sell.
Spring and autumn. The solar system energy production is at max while the expenses are low. Nothing is imported from the grid. There is a lot of energy to sell. Alas, not only is it extremely cheap even in the morning/evening/night, but the FiT may be even negative so exporting the energy means a loss.
Winter. The solar system energy production is at its lowest and normally doesn't cover my energy expenses fully. I have to buy electricity from the grid and obviously there is rarely any energy to sell. This is the time when the price volatility events happen and FiT may spring to values from $1/kWh to $5/kWh and $20/kWh. However, these events are rare and they are usually short. The best ever energy sale my system was able to make was ~$12 in one day, but such events happened only 2 or 3 times per whole winter.
All this situation could have been compensated by a really smart software SmartShift if it actually were. However, most of the time SmartShift behaves very passively. It is frequently misses good opportunities to sell or buy and sometimes buys when the price is not good even though it is configured to optimize earnings. Despite having a huge amount of historical data, patterns that appear over and over, they could not manage to make SmartShift working well. Instead of sitting tight and enjoying zero electricity bill, I am in a constant state of of stress because I am suspecting that at this very moment SmartShift either doesn't act, when it is expected to act, or acts, when it is expected to do nothing.
For example, it is winter, a sunny day or a wind-blowing day, the energy is cheap like $0.05 - $0.10 per kWh, tomorrow or even in the evening the opposite is expected, no wind and lots of clouds. The FiT will become $0.30/kWh - $0.60/kWh. This situation happens over and over so it is very predictable. What would you expect? SmartShift would buy as much energy as possible during the day topping up the battery and then sell the energy the next day or in the evening. Rinse and repeat. What does SmartShift do? Almost nothing. It sits tight during the day, not buying anything. Then when the FiT hits $0.40/kWh (or whatever price it calculated as "good enough to sell") it sells a couple of kWh. Then it proudly shows you a report that says your average FiT during the month is let's say $0.45/kWh. Only it omits to say that it sold only 5 kWh in total.
Another situation, summer/spring/autumn, a hot evening, the FiT is high. Tomorrow there will be a sunny day. What would you expect SmartShift to do? Sell the energy now, earn money, because tomorrow all of it will come back from the sun. Rinse and repeat again. What does SmartShift do? Simply nothing. It waits until the next morning with the full battery and then I start paying money for export because a negative FiT during summer or autumn is quite a frequent situation. Sometimes SS wakes up for short periods of time, but it doesn't make any difference.
Third situation, fortunately a rare one but the most unnerving. The battery is close to empty, like 25%. Morning. The grid price is relatively high, but again, a sunny day is predicted today. Suddenly SmartShift breaks free from the leash and start importing electricity at the expensive price.
Fourth situation. Winter. The battery is close to empty, the sky is cloudy, the solar system is barely producing any energy, but the wind is blowing and there is abundance of cheap energy in the grid. Tomorrow the day will be worse - no sun and no wind predicted. However, today the price looks like $0.12 most of the time from 10:00 to 16:00, with a small dip to $0.11 in the midday. Do you think SmartShift buys energy from 10:00 to 16:00? Naaaah... $0.12 is not good enough, it goes for the best price only, only 30 minutes one cent less than the whole day.
I don't know who is in a good position with Amber. Probably people with over-powered setups and an abundance of energy. Or the people who live in a region where the price volatility events are frequent. Or the people who normally spend a lot of energy, had huge bills, and are simply happy now because they can buy it cheap.
Switched to AGL - Battery Rewards Plan. Half a month with it and I am already in a credit, something that never happened with Amber. With Amber during six previous months my monthly bills were from $30 to $130, far from the expectations and from the picture they paint in the ads.

Unfortunately, SmartShift has not always operated in a way that makes financial and common sense for my home, I feel the maturity of SmartShift still has someway to go. My battery has sometimes been charged from the grid without me requesting it, including at prices well over what I would have agreed to pay when significantly cheaper electricity was forecast not that much later. I have also experienced unwanted imports and difficulty manually exporting stored battery energy, even when higher feed-in prices made exporting preferable. These decisions can quickly erode the savings, particularly when Amber’s daily supply and membership charges must also be recovered.
The other major challenge is the lack of direct control and clear explanations for some battery decisions. Amber’s support staff have generally been polite and have investigated my concerns, including providing a credit on one occasion, but the underlying issues have not always been clearly explained or permanently resolved. Recent system maintenance and exchange outages have also raised questions about how SmartShift behaves when services are unavailable ( this can lead to costly outcomes for the customer ).
Amber is an innovative service that can deliver excellent results under the right market conditions, especially for solar and battery owners who understand wholesale pricing. However, I believe SmartShift needs greater transparency, more reliable battery control and better options for customers who want to make their own charging and exporting decisions. There is a lot to like about Amber, but my experience has shown that the automation does not always produce the best financial outcome. I would go into this with open eyes and understand the cons before changing over.

The App says there are 'No Issues' but the App can't give me any control over my system because their system can't 'generate a battery plan'. Ring up and the voice says you'll talk to someone, wrong, you leave a message with an AI bot. You then get an email telling you they will contact you in 2 days. The email you get talks about the problem you told them about in the message you left, but if you go to reply to the email, it bounces back to you as undeliverable. Nothing gets fixed and you leave more messages until you realize they will never call you and your stuck in an inane endless loop. They have a few more days and then I'm walking and the only joy I'll get is letting everyone know how hopeless they are.
