 AI reviews summary

This report synthesises recent feedback for China Highlights, based on a high volume of 5-star reviews and occasional 4-star experiences.

The overall sentiment is exceptionally positive, with users frequently highlighting the company's ability to provide a "VIP experience" that removes the logistical friction of travelling in China. The service is characterised by highly personalised itineraries, seamless multi-city transitions, and guides who go beyond standard duties to accommodate families, dietary needs, and special occasions. While the vast majority of experiences are flawless, minor issues regarding specific hotel standards and itinerary oversights have been noted.

Pros
Exceptional Guide Quality: Guides (frequently mentioned: Jason, Selinda, Cecilia, Winnie, and Marianne) are praised for fluent English, deep historical knowledge, and proactive problem-solving. Many users noted that guides acted as photographers, taught local games like Mahjong, and adjusted pacing to suit elderly travellers or children.
Seamless Logistics: The coordination of bullet train tickets, airport transfers, and "platform-to-seat" assistance is a recurring highlight. This "hassle-free" approach is particularly valued by first-time visitors and non-Chinese speakers navigating complex cities like Chongqing and Beijing.
Personalised & Flexible Itineraries: Reviewers consistently mention the company's willingness to modify plans on the fly, such as adding unscheduled stops for local street food, finding specific books, or arranging impromptu birthday celebrations with cakes and decorations.
Authentic Cultural Immersion: Beyond standard tourist sites, the "Host Project" and visits to local tea houses, traditional medicine clinics, and community ping pong matches were cited as standout, authentic experiences that provided deeper insight into Chinese life.
Cons
Occasional Itinerary Oversights: A significant issue was reported where a specific physical requirement (avoiding climbing due to a leg injury) was ignored during the planning phase, requiring the local guide to intervene and fix the route on the day.
Inconsistent Hotel Quality: While most accommodation is praised, some users noted that "boutique" or "5-star" selections occasionally fell short of expectations, citing old facilities, poor water pressure, or cleanliness issues in specific properties like the Novotel Peace Beijing.
Variable Guide Experience: While most guides are "A-grade", a few users noted that newer guides can occasionally appear "lost" or inexperienced, acting more like a "caring friend" than a professional lead.
Unexpected Costs: A few reviewers mentioned confusion regarding "unexpected fees" for specific destinations they believed were already covered in their initial high-cost tour package.
Verdict

China Highlights is an elite choice for travellers seeking a highly managed, stress-free, and culturally rich journey through China, especially for families and those with mobility concerns. The company excels at high-touch personal service and complex logistics, though travellers should double-check that specific physical restrictions are clearly communicated to the local guides before arrival. Overall, it is highly recommended for those who prioritise service quality and local expertise over budget.

We just wrapped up an incredible trip to Chengdu, and our experience was made entirely unforgettable thanks to our amazing guide! participate in the Panda volunteer/caretaker class was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and our guide ensured we had the best possible access and context while learning about conservation efforts. Later in the week, taking us to the Sichuan opera was an absolute thrill—they explained the history, secured fantastic seats, and made sure we didn't miss a single beat of the incredible face-changing performances. Beyond the major sights, their insider tips on the local food scene and effortless navigation of the city made traveling with family an absolute breeze. If you are heading to Chengdu, do yourself a favor and book them—you won't find a more thoughtful, professional, or engaging guide anywhere!

- This review covers the last day of a 12-day tour in the region organized as a private tour with China Highlights - We had a great experience throughout the trip and our last stop at Chongqing was the icing on the cake! around Chongqing and we will be back for a longer stay. Chongqing was our last destination for our departing flight back home and so we had planned only a 1-day stopover. But it was a fantastic one-day with our lively and lovely guide Amy. She was enthusiastic and gave us a great introduction to Chongqing. She knew we had only one day and she made sure that we hit the major sites - all well-executed in conjunction with our personal driver who dropped us off and picked us up in practically military precision. We wasted no time in moving from one place to another.

We visited Shibati (Eighteen Stars), Kuixing Building, Hongyadong, Liziba, Ciqikou, Liberation Times Square, Top of the WFC and Raffles City Chongqing. Besides seeing some of the major touristy sights we were also given an opportunity to enjoy the "host project" which was a walk through the local community to see how the residents of Chongqing live and to experience the local flavour and environment. We particularly enjoyed that as it gave us great perspective on the progress of Chongqing and how far it has come in just 3 decades. AMAZING. We also got to enjoy a lot of local food at local establishments which were all well-recommended by Amy.

And for the grand finale in the evening, Amy arranged for us a river cruise at 8pm. She knew there was the once a month drone display in the night sky that starts at 8.30pm that (Saturday) evening and specifically arranged VIP tickets for us on the cruise so that we sat upfront at the top of the boat without the crowd to enjoy the great scenery and show.

Amy was with us from the start to the end of the day to make sure nothing went wrong. And this was especially important to me as I was travelling with my 80+ old mum who needed some help in moving around.

The whole day was well-coordinated, efficient and comfortable! Amy is an outstanding tour guide. We will be back!

always very punctual with the driver and our timeline. Out of our 4 stops in China so far, Guilin was the most enjoyable and it was largely due to Gary!

He made great suggestions of where to go and what activities we should do. Although we had locations set, he had great knowledge of local activities and eats.

We hit the reed flute cave, the Li river cruise tour, Yangshou countryside the old town of Daxu, and the Elephant Trunk Hill. Our favourite was biking around the countryside of yangshou and the old town of Daxu!

If you can request a guide, I would 10/10 recommend you ask for Gary every time!

Our 1 and 1/2 days trip to Chongqing turned out to be way too short to fully visit this amazing vertical city. It is truly spectacular. Our guide Michel (who also speaks excellent French) showed us the most iconic places, inlcuding a visit to the old shelter tunnels now turned into restaurants and shops. Michel voluntarily shares a lot of information and his friendly nature makes you feel welcome and well cared for.

We spent a few days in Chengdu and China Highlights perfectly organized all the activities for us: we felt relaxed and satisfied, and their attention to the customer and their needs is truly outstanding! house, and to the Giant Buddha of Leshan… EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!!!! And beyond what was already planned, Helen taught us how to play Mahjong – a very fun game that locals are passionate about – in a beautiful tea house inside the People’s Park; and since we wanted to see a market to buy Sichuan pepper, Helen took us there and described all the vegetables and fruit on display… And at times she suggested activities we could do on our own! In short, thank you China Highlights for making our trip to China unforgettable.

Our trip to Chengdu was an unforgettable experience! One of the highlights was visiting the Panda Base, where we got to see the adorable giant pandas up close. We also enjoyed a relaxing walk through People’s Park, where we had traditional tea and even played mahjong with our lovely guide, Eric. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the experience so much fun by sharing interesting stories about Chengdu and helping us feel like locals.

We have engaged the tour agency for a 14 days private tour to Yunnan, Chong Qing and Chengdu. All the tour guides are friendly, professional and knowledgeable. tour guide has their commendable strengths which we will point out below. Rosemary - Knows how to make us feel at home with our first stop in Kunming. Gives off family sister vibes. Brought us to good places for food and knows Singaporeans’ taste for food. Highly recommended the rose flavour and ham flavour tang yuan which are something special in Kunming. Joan - Presented hospitality with the highest EQ which makes us feel so blessed to have her as our guide. While we Singaporeans love to stop and shop in every shop, she waited patiently and even offered to help us carry our shopping bags (we rejected a few times while she sincerely insisted). She tries her best to help us take photos and we had fun posing for her. Adam - He patiently gives us freedom to do what we like to eat, rest, shop, and go toilet. Peter - We are blessed to have him as our Tibetan tour guide who can explained to us about Buddhism and their spiritual walk in an in depth way. We enjoyed his sharing of life experience and because of his connections, we have a divine chance to speak to a monk (his friend) in the Tibetan monastery. Tracy - She is time efflcient with the itinerary like a Singaporean does “chop chop curry pok”. It works when you want to get out of the 40 degrees burning hot sun in the open spaces of Chong Qing and hide indoors and cool yourselves down with cold bubble tea. Eric - He gives off the young brother vibes. We appreciate that he sincerely offer to help us talk to the driver when shifting a few itineraries. We bonded with him the most as he holds great command of English language. Since he knows Singaporean nuances very well, we enjoyed holding conversations with him, exchanging stories about ourselves too.

Our tour guide is Winnie and my mom and I visited Chongqing. We were booked into a hotel with a beautiful view of the river and city. Winnie showed us many beautiful places near the river and tourist attractions such as the train station in the building. In addition to that, she gave us a tour of her university.

allowed us to try local restaurants that don’t cater to large tour groups. The food was outstanding everywhere we went because the guides knew where to take us for delicious local food. The five star hotels were also excellent. We were pretty tired at the end of the day, so we wanted a nice place to shower and rest. Karry, who was our China Highlights travel agent, did a wonderful job getting us the port visa since I had a difficult time obtaining a tourist visa. With Karry's help with getting us a port visa, it greatly reduced my anxiety regarding getting a tourist visa. Karry was very clear about all the trip preparations and responded to our questions in a very timely manner.

Henry, who was our guide for Guilin, accommodated our every need. He took me to the pharmacy when I caught a cold. When I learned about the Red Yao people and how they treated their shiny , healthy hair with fermented rice water shampoo , Henry took me to a local salon that gave me a special shampoo treatment with a similar shampoo. Due to the physical limitations in our group, Henry took us to the scenic overlook called the Painting of the 100O Mountains which allowed us to see several limestone peaks in a panoramic view. This scenic overlook did not require a lot of steps to hike. Henry was extremely accommodating. So we like the China Highlights' custom tour because it offers greater flexibility to meet our personal needs. With China highlights Custom Tours , there’s a lot more flexibility with choosing specific restaurants for local food and making accommodations on the itinerary when necessary. Thank you again China Highlights for a wonderful China tour experience! I highly recommend China Highlights if you need to book a tour in China.

Our 7ppl private 20- Day trip was quite a trip. We had 2 elderly and 1 x 5 year old traveling through Beijing, Zhangjiajie, Chongqing, Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, and Xian. Overall, we all had a great trip. We did have some hiccups in the trip and tour guides that we liked and didn't like as much on the trip. Our favorite tour guide was, Tony at… Read more

Zhangjiajie. He was great. He was able to provide a ton of information at every location we went. He was clear and very informative of local traditions and cultures. We left feeling like we really knew the place and experienced all we could. His English was well spoken, allowing us to clearly understand everything. He was also very well connected, allowing him to be very honest with where to shop and where not to shop. There was never the feeling that our group was compelled to buy anything.

Our second best tour guide was Eric in Chengdu. He was able to provide excellent customer service. We had many hotel issues from the rooms being to hot to the iron not working. Eric immediately contacted the hotel to resolve the issues. He not only got the front desk involved, but he reached out to the hotel manager who personally apologized. Eric also was able to communicate clearly in English with us and took time to show us historical sites even late at night. Eric was also our guide at Jiuzhaigou. Being the attraction was mostly going up and down stairs, Eric was extremely patient making many rest stops. Eric went with our speed and focused on what we were most interested in seeing. Our group needed tons of flexibility and patience due to the 2 elderly and 1 child and Eric definitely met both. We would have loved for Eric to provide more discriptions and history at all the attractions.

One thing on the trip that we did not appreciate was when tour guides led us to stores that placed us in awkward situations where we were pressured to purchase items. We were taken to stores by certain tour guides and told we didn't have to purchase anything, However, we would be the only family in the store with 3 store clerks handing us items and asking if we wanted to buy it. We made it clear to our tour organizer we did not want to be compelled to purchase anything, but it still happened at certain attractions.

I general, China Attractions provided our family with a wonderful experience. We fully enjoyed our trip and would love to visit China again. The take away is we would shorten the trip to 14-days max and request for hotels that offer self serve laundry facilities. In Chengdu, we learned our lesson. There weren't many self serve laundry facilities and even the 1 we found didn't have a proper working dryer. Again, thank you Eric for getting the hotel to help with drying our laundry for free.

deal of time and allowing us to make the most of our trip.

Selinda also went above and beyond to give us authentic local experiences. She took us to a park where we had the opportunity to play ping pong with local residents. It was a lot of fun and gave us a glimpse into a pastime that is clearly enjoyed by many people in China.

Most importantly, Selinda was exceptionally kind and thoughtful toward my 90-year-old mother. She was always patient, attentive, and considerate, making every effort to ensure that my mother was comfortable and that everything was as easy as possible for her. Her care and compassion meant a great deal to our group.

We highly recommend Selinda Zhang. She is professional, caring, well-organized, and truly passionate about what she does. She made our experience in Beijing smooth, enjoyable, and memorable, and we are very grateful to have had her as our guide
