Jake at Odynovo was the reason we booked. He knew China cold and answered questions about half a dozen other destinations besides. He let us choose hotels that fit the experience we wanted rather than pushing a package. And he stayed in touch, every other agency I contacted simply disappeared after the first exchange.

It held up on the ground. Excellent guides in every city. The plan was precise, and every single person was on time, every single day.

The tour summary he sent ahead deserves a mention on its own: every day, every transfer, every guide, every hotel, laid out clearly enough that my family walked into a country where none of us speak the language feeling confident instead of anxious.

Pricing may have been slightly higher than alternatives. The peace of mind was worth far more than the difference. No matter if you think you can do it yourself, just use Odynovo, effortless travel is better.

One thing I would have changed, we did an extensive tour of 6 cities in 10 days, I should have had Jake do it all. The hotels, the flights, the transfers, I created dozens of profiles with trains, planes and automobile services, mostly in Chinese and Jake could have saved me 40 hours of wasted work.

I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Ask for Jake.

We had a short, busy and very good visit to Chengdu, Sichuan and were hosted by Abby Hu. She is great. Her English is excellent and she is very knowledgeable of the city and its history, and also familiar with the Shenshuping Panda Base. planner Nikki Xia was exceptional. She put together a detailed, thoughtful itinerary for nine of us travelling across Guangzhou, Yangshuo and Zhangjiajie over ten days — a group with mixed ages, different energy levels and varying mobility needs. It's not a simple itinerary to build or to execute, and Nikki managed the planning phase with complete professionalism and genuine flexibility. Every question was answered, every adjustment accommodated.

On the ground, we were in equally good hands. Linda guided us through Guangzhou with warmth and deep local knowledge. Alice took care of us in Guilin — the Yangshuo and Li River experience was a highlight of the entire trip, and her guidance made it. Tracey in Zhangjiajie was outstanding — professional, adaptable, and brilliant at managing a large group through one of China's most spectacular and logistically demanding destinations.

The hallmark of a great guide is flexibility, and all three had it in abundance. When plans needed to shift, they shifted. When someone in the group needed a different pace or approach, it was accommodated without fuss. There was a warmth and generosity to the service across the board that made the whole experience feel personal rather than transactional.

For context: I had previously done a DIY trip to China — ten days in Shanghai and Beijing — and I managed. But managing is exactly the right word. Every logistics problem was mine to solve. Every uncertainty about transport, timing and language fell on me. It was fine, but it was also tiring in a way that quietly took the edge off the experience. Travelling with Odynovo this year was a completely different proposition. The logistics simply disappeared. I could be present. I could enjoy China rather than administer it.

I intend to travel to China repeatedly in the coming years. I will be using Odynovo every time. If you're on the fence about whether a guided tour is worth it for China, I would say — from direct personal experience of both approaches — that it absolutely is, and Odynovo is the agency to use. The sites and activities were well-chosen and rewarding. We were surrounded with care from start to finish.

A special shout-out goes to two exceptional guides. Ali Galal (Lower Egypt sites) was extremely knowledgeable and clearly conveyed the exceptional ancient history of Egypt to us. In addition, for more modern history, we were enriched by his clear and concise explanation of the Islamic religion allowing us to understand its precepts as we visited mosques in Cairo. Ahmed Saber (Aswan and Luxor) shared his tremendous expertise about sites in upper Egypt, ending with a magical evening tour of his hometown Luxor in an hour long carriage ride through the city. Both guides had excellent language skills and were very personable, making us feel like they were friends as well as historians. Another special shout-out goes to our drivers, particularly Taha, who knew Cairo like the back of his hand and handled the city’s crazy traffic like a pro. His skill allowed us to travel smoothly from busy downtown Giza to the smallest village in the countryside.

Our Odynovo tour went without a single major problem. At no time during the entire 20 days in Egypt did we feel unsafe or uncertain. When changes to the planned itinerary were necessary due to a dust storm in Luxor, alternative activities were quickly arranged and implemented. A last-minute domestic flight change was handled by Odynovo managers and communicated not only to us but to our guides and drivers so all ensured we made our flight. We were greatly impressed with the value we got from the price of the trip, and enjoyed the personal attention that only a private tour could give.
