 AI reviews summary

The overall sentiment for McDonald Jones Homes is highly positive, particularly regarding the pre-construction and design phases. Customers frequently praise the professionalism and expertise of specific sales consultants and interior designers, noting that the selection process is often smooth and well-guided. While the majority of experiences are successful, a small segment of reviews highlights significant frustrations regarding post-handover defects, communication breakdowns during construction, and extended timelines in specific regions.

Pros
Exceptional Pre-Construction Support: Staff members, particularly at the Braemar and Warnervale offices, are frequently commended for their patience, transparency, and ability to customise floor plans to suit specific land requirements and budgets.
Professional Design Guidance: The MyChoice Design Studio consultants are highly praised for their styling expertise, helping users navigate internal and external selections with practical advice that balances aesthetics with cost-effectiveness.
Strong Site Supervision: Multiple users report positive construction experiences, citing site supervisors who provide consistent weekly updates, photos, and maintain high standards of workmanship on-site.
Effective After-Care for Minor Issues: Many homeowners note that minor maintenance requests and post-handover adjustments are handled promptly and professionally by dedicated handover supervisors.
Cons
Post-Handover Defect Management: A subset of reviews indicates difficulties in getting significant defects rectified after moving in, with some users reporting long wait times or lack of response from the warranty team.
Geographic Service Variability: Feedback suggests a disparity in service quality between regions; while some branches receive perfect scores, others (notably in the ACT/Canberra area) have been linked to reports of poor project management and accountability.
Communication Lapses: Some users experienced a decline in communication once the project moved from sales to the construction phase, leading to frustrations over delays and unresolved site issues.
Material and Quality Issues: A small number of reports mention recurring technical problems, such as plumbing leaks, substandard paint finishes, or incorrectly sized air conditioning units that do not meet climate needs.
Verdict

McDonald Jones Homes is a strong contender for those seeking a structured, well-supported design and planning experience with professional consultant guidance. While most builds progress efficiently, prospective clients should remain diligent during the construction and warranty phases to ensure technical defects are addressed promptly.

creating a home design that truly reflects what we wanted. We are incredibly grateful for her guidance and would highly recommend her. Our time with Emily has significantly contributed to a positive experience thus far.

One aspect of the experience that we found incredibly valuable was having the same design consultant throughout the entire design process. We understand that the company doesn’t guarantee clients will have the same consultant for every appointment, and we appreciated that we were fortunate for this to be the case. However, there was always a level of uncertainty leading up to each appointment, as we weren’t sure whether we would be meeting with someone new. We believe that ensuring customers are matched with one consultant for the entirety of their design selections would significantly improve the customer experience. Continuity helps clients feel more supported, reduces the need to revisit previous decisions, and makes what can be a complex process feel much more personal and seamless.

progress of the build.

A special thank you must go to our Project Manager, Dale Baxter, who played a significant role in making the entire experience smooth and stress-free. Dale was approachable, responsive, and always willing to explain the different stages of construction clearly. He kept us informed, responded promptly to our questions, and ensured that any matters raised were followed up and resolved appropriately.

The quality of workmanship throughout the property was impressive. The team demonstrated excellent attention to detail, and the finishes were completed neatly and professionally. Quality, safety, and compliance were clearly treated as priorities throughout the construction process.

What stood out most was the end-to-end customer experience. Any questions, concerns, or minor issues were handled promptly and professionally. The level of support continued even after construction was completed, which gave us additional confidence and peace of mind.

Building a property, particularly a dual-occupancy development, can be a complex and stressful process. However, the professionalism, communication, coordination, workmanship, issue resolution, compliance, and ongoing support provided by McDonald Jones Homes made our experience genuinely positive.

We have already recommended McDonald Jones Homes to many of our friends, and several of them have now started their own building journeys with MJH. This reflects the level of confidence and satisfaction we have in the company and its team.

We are extremely satisfied with the completed property and would confidently recommend McDonald Jones Homes to anyone considering building a new home or investment property.

Our sincere thanks to Dale Baxter and the entire McDonald Jones Homes team for their dedication, professionalism, and support in successfully delivering our property. We would gladly choose MJH again for any future build.

We have nothing but praise and admiration for the McDonald Jones Oak Flat Building Team, including the husband and wife sales team at Wongawilli. the DA over the line. They have been really professional, supportive, empathetic helpfull and patient. And we must say they should be an inspiration to other builders. Their clientele support, communications, easy to talk & deal with, progress photos, and the quality of their workmanship and materials and pricing is all aimed at building and delivering a great and beautiful home for their clients. AND, what a house McDonald Jones is building us...... WOW !!! It is now approaching lock-up stage....and again, WOW !!!

I showed my brother, (a structural engineer) photos of the steel-frame of the house McDonald Jones is building us. And he was absolutely impressed and astounded by the amount of steel and steel frame thats gone into the building of the house. As he commented, " Great house to get away from the Big Bad Wolf."

I take my hat off, and put the entire McDonald Jones Team at Oak Flats and Wongiwilli up on the highest pedestal, from the beginning to the builds present stage.

Our build journey started with the husband and wife sales team at Wongawilli, George and Annslee. They are remarkable, and we soon developed a great rapport. Speaking of which this great rapport was extended right into the whole McDonald Jones Team at Oak Flats. George and Annslee helped and spoke with us about the correct design for our block and working within our budget. They also invited us to the Oak Flats office one evening, where we were shown videos, shown building materials and other construction items like; bench tops, door handles, basins etc. We were also introduced to a lot of other Oak Flat team members.

We then had an appointment to meet Ben at the Oak Flat office. Ben was great in helping us make the correct selection choices and styling for all the internals and externals, including appliances, kitchen, bench tops, door handles, cupboards, doors and colours and more.... And the way we chopped and changed, lucky, Ben is a very patient man .... haha ;). And all the other staff at the Oak Flat Office, including the friendly receptionists, Monique, Mrs. Lee, Allison, Bella G., and every single team member quietly working at back of house on plans, designs, sorting out council DA's etc etc. Thank you all for your professionalism and dedication.

After starting construction last October, the build has been full steam ahead. Great progress has been acheived and just about to lock up stage and we are so .... very excited !! Thanks to the two great building supervisors; namely George Pastrovic and Cameron Dagger. Thank you both for keeping us updated with your consistent uploading of progress photos to our profile. Great communication skills and general easy to work and get a long with attitude. Both George and Cameron have shown great professionalism and skills as building supervisors, liasoning with us and contractors. Ours was not an easy build, due to its difficult location. However, due to George and Cameron's tenacity and the support of the entire Oak Flat's Team, many issues and problems, were overcome. Again, I thank you all, for building our dream home come to fruition.

We also would like to say a BIG Thank You to all the contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers that McDonald Jones have chosen to contribute towards our build. They are the quiet achievers and they have been picked by McDonald Jones for their professionalism, and quality in workmanship.

And finally a big thank you also, to the McDonald Jones CEO Rob Douglas and all managers for running a great Building Company like McDonald Jones for your; Customer Service, Innovation, Building Designs and Plans, Professionalism, Flexability and making McDonald Jones Homes an Inspiration To Other Builders, that they could only wish to strive for, and setting a great standard for these other builders to strive for.

My wife and I have said it before, and we'll keep on saying it, " McDonalds Jones Is Too Good To Be True. Amazingly It's All True !!!

And to cap it off, again: Thank You So Much McDonald Jones

Wayne also went out of his way to do our handover before the long weekend, late on a Friday afternoon, so we could have our keys as soon as possible. I want to share our experience building a home with McDonald Jones. Our house is a dual occupancy property, and the construction took around six months. Throughout the entire process, Dale, our… Read more ·  1

project manager, kept us updated weekly. Everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Before we knew it, the house was complete, and it was time for the final inspection. Dale was incredible. He guided us through every detail, explaining everything clearly and celebrating the completion of our home with us. Every part of the work by McDonald Jones was meticulous—far beyond our expectations. From the tiles to the grouting, down to every bit of silicone, everything was finished neatly and with exceptional quality. What really sets McDonald Jones apart isn’t just the construction itself. Since this was our first investment property, we had little to no knowledge about the process, but they guided us on real estate decisions and recommended everything we needed. Any minor issues in the house were addressed immediately. Even two months after completion, I am still extremely satisfied with the communication and support they provided throughout. If we ever build another house, there’s no question—we would choose McDonald Jones again. A heartfelt thank you to Dale for turning our dream into reality, and to his entire team for their dedication. Special thanks to Lili in the office for all the help along the way. And to everyone at McDonald Jones who worked tirelessly from start to finish to make sure our home was completed flawlessly—thank you so much.

Our single-story home took a year to build and finished in mid-Nov 2025. All things considered, we’re pretty happy with the completed construction despite some bumps along the journey. I’d like to give a shoutout to Angela Jackson (Site Supervisor) and the MJH Team who brought our new house to life. What I liked: - The administration from… Read more ·  2

planning to handover was generally well organised and structured. It was a step-by-step process. - The house is exactly as per plan. No surprises. Quite happy with the finishing build. - Lachlan Tupper was great to work with during the initial engagement and tender presentation. - Ziggi and Danielle were friendly and helpful. - Angela Jackson did a great job for us a kept us updated regularly. I appreciate her transparency when things weren’t going exactly to plan but told us what the next steps were.

What I didn’t like: - The roofing insulation that was left opened for a week during rain. We were told that it'll just dry out. Not sure if they ever replaced it. - The valley finishing of the colorbond roof looks weird, but there hasn’t been leaks during heavy rain, so I guess it’s fine. - The electrical appointment felt like we were rushed, but we’re happy with the result. - The two separate water plumbing leaks that occurred in June and Sept 2025. These were eventually fixed and repair works done, but they were concerning knowing it happened for a new build.

What could be improved: - The internal and external selections to be more transparent with choices and their pricing so that we could plan ahead. Making decisions on the meeting day without a table of choices was rather stressful. It got really confusing as to what items were included as standard and which ones were an upgrade. A spreadsheet with photos would have been so helpful for us to make decisions more efficiently.

We're 3 weeks into post handover. No major issues apart from the downlights occasionally flickering.

Overall happy with MJH, given how unpredictable the construction industry can be. Thank you MJH!

kept our costs down, expectations real and our construction project executed to plan and under budget. We can truly say we are blown away by our final home. The early days of working on a plan and design were incredibly stressful. The sales team- Ton and Kat did a wonderful job in helping us to choose a suitable plan and navigate us through the multiple decisions and challenges we would face. Once construction started, supervisor James was fabulous. No issue was not dealt with promptly (like any project in life you will face bumps, but it’s how it’s managed that matters). Our design consultant did a wonderful job by ensuring our vision came to life and guided us with her experience and good eye for detail. We had enough flexibility after handover to do our own flooring, windows dressing and add a few personalised touches. Our build complete in 7 months! Thank you MacDonald Jones. We are still pinching ourselves.

layers. The first half good, the second half crooked. The roof has missing flashing and on the windows. Tilling still not finished plus more. Had to pull down gyprock as wall were crooked. Now end of January 2025 and still houses are not finished. The rendering was done on the bad bricking house, the bottom of house is crocked so when footpath is cemented it looks bad. The brickwork on the other house has to be stained as bad batch of bricks. Been waiting from last year still not done. Tiles inside is not good still waiting to be fixed and finished. Microwave oven cupboard has a hole in back and told this is how it is done. I have informed them one house has no hole so fix the other house. They say still waiting for the kitchen mob to fix. NBN one house no string in it so they won't connect until fixed. This is costing us interest and lost revenue of $1,500 per week rent. I have retired and have no income as this is my pension. I have to draw down on the loan to live. They say the house will do PCI on 31st January but house will not be ready then as they will still have problems to fix. You cannot put tenants in and say let repairers in to fix things. Mc Donald Jones get your act together. One year over contract and still not finished. $35 a day does not cover interest and no income from my investment. I have 2 pages of things that still need doing before PC and is nearly of January 2025. They tell they owe me $8,000 per house for being late, but it has cost me in interest and lost income way more than that. We are now on our 5th site supervisor and countless tilers trying to fix up previous work done. Still inside house painting needs fixing. Faulty bricks from still not done/staining, how long will stain last? May 2025 they gave us the keys, only 1 front door key, what happen to the other one. No photos to prove the work has been done as we were overseas when handover happened. They did pay the $35 per day for the excess time for the late hand over, still did not cover interest paid. When tenants moved in there was a leak and it wet the new carpet and a large hole in wall in toilet was made to repair it. It has been over 3 months and hole in wall still not fixed and no photos to show repairs have been completed. Now done after 3 months but waiting for the wall to be painted. The wall still not painted another month later. McDonald Jones wants the 13 week repair list to sent, we have tenants in house will do for 3 month inspection. We live a 10hr drive from houses to find some jobs still not completed and found more things that need repairs. Still no repairs done and it is end of September. My son build with McDonald Jones and his house given to him 5 months before us and he is still waiting on repairs for 9 months and counting. Inside of his house has to be repainted. Someone sanded of the ceiling and walls and they did a bad job. It is September 2025, so for it to be fixed and the painting to be done. He has been in house now 9 months and still waiting for painting and other repairs. We have made calls to site manager [Name Removed] and he does not return calls after building had problems with water leakage. McDonald Jones do not like to finish the mistakes that are made in their builds and they hope you just stop asking and don't follow through. We received a gift to say thank you, but we built 2 houses and only gave us 1 gift for both houses. We were given 2 mini Webber's for all the problems but not larger enough for people living in a 5 bedroom house.

Follow-up  · They had access to do 12 week repairs. I had asked for photos to see that repairs were done. But still no photos or communication from McDonald Jones. The builds are rentals so they don't know what was done as they were at work. They never gave the second original key, no photos to see if rusting on roof if fixed. Yes the staining on bricks was done and looks good.

I note with many of the reviews on this forum that the main issues with this company are to do with construction of the build and lack of communication. Fortunately, I now believe from reading some of these reviews, that I did not construct a home with them. My problem was a complete lack of communication from their Head Office (not locate reps)… Read more

with respect to unexplained pricing increases.

My story began in March of last year when I went to the regional office in Oak Flats to sign off on my tender. With me, I had a list of variations which I wanted to include in the build and which were priced in writing by the on-site rep. When I presented this list to the representative at Oak Flats, I was advised that the pricing of each item was not correct. The sales lady at Oak Flats for example pointed out that the gas fire which was priced at $10,000 was in fact $18,000, the kitchen sinks which were quoted at $1200 were in fact $3000 each (note a price check by me with a supplier of these sinks indicated approximately $1200) and so it went on to the tune of some $40,000 more than originally quoted for the variations and needless to say, I did not sign off on the tender.

When I raised the issue with the representative at Wongawilli, I was advised that the pricing was provided by the Sydney office. I was then advised that the area manager would contact me to discuss the issue. That manager did not meet with me and he was replaced by another gentleman who also indicated he would be in touch but once again, it did not happen. A third representative contacted me from Sydney advising me that she would also try to reconcile the issue. That also did not happen and that lady advised I would be contacted by the company General Manager and that also did not happen!!!

Frankly, I was well and truly over it and decided understandably not to proceed with McDonald Jones Homes. Based on the fact that the build did not proceed, was in no way caused by any action from my side but clearly through their lack of any attempt to resolve the issue with me. To that end, I requested that they refund my $5000 deposit which they refused (I was not surprised). What is very clear to me is that this company is motivated by profit and customer satisfaction is secondary! I would like to add that the representatives at Wongawilli were most helpful and proactive at all times.

To conclude, I have lost a year of trying to build my dream home and it is my intention to contact the parent company in Japan and make them well aware of the experience that I have had with their local company. I am quite sure they will not be impressed.

Our journey with McDonald Jones commenced in 2020. We are now in 2026 and we still do not have a finished home. On some days I believe it has to Be an episode of candid camera the service and quality is so bad and they just don’t care. Even today it is like they are doing me some kind of favour fixing the defects. We gave up on persuing cosmetic… Read more

issues. We just don’t have the energy. The chief counsel out and out lied to the NSW building commission to get our complaint closed but then personally promised the rectification works would be concluded by March 2025. The excuses have kept coming. Parts of the rectifications are of poorer quality than the original poor quality. Now in May 2026 as I muster the energy to go back to the building commission the same Senior Site Manager that has inspected and photographed the issues numerous times since May 2024 suddenly emails suggesting I “take some photos” of the issues and he’ll get it “sorted”. We originally dealt with the central coast branch and they were great. The second the job transferred to Canberra it has been lie after Lie. A total lack of accountability and 0 project management. We incurred over $100 000 in additional site costs due to McDonald Jones incompetence and short cutting. Key design features were not delivered that make the property Unworkable. Their review scores look great because they capture your feedback numerous times before the build starts. I am more than happy for McDonald Jones to contradict or challenge any of my assertions. I have 6 years worth of correspondence, independent building reports etc. that I will more than happily share with any unfortunate soul considering building with McDonald Jones in the ACT or surrounding NSW villages.

Proposed build was on land not yet registered (rego expected 12/25). Through sales process we were advised that after contract was signed our file would be parked until time closer to land registration. We would then be invited in to do various selections (external/internal/electrical). Contrary to that advice we were dragged in to complete all of… Read more

these stages within 2 months of signing contract. It was a rushed process.

When we signed the contract we sought guidance on timeframe for development approval. We were trying to determine whether to lock in price for 12 months or pay extra for the 18 month fixed contract. The advice was that it would take 6 to at 8 weeks, most likely earlier because it was a complying development. Once land was registered we received email advising the approval process would be 4 to 6 months (3 times longer than original guidance).

When we signed the contract we advised that plans for the driveway needed to be changed. We discussed our requirements and Project Manager advised she would change the plans. The plans were not changed as requested and the driveway approval is now in the incorrect place. They now advise that its our problem to fix and get plans changed.

After construction approval we thought we would be moving into construction phase only to be advised they require 6 weeks to order materials. Given we completed all selections in a rush 10 months ago I would have expected material requirements would have been clearly defined and ready to go.

We had 3 different project managers during this ~12m phase which didn't assist. Found them to be dismissive of our concerns. They provide little in the way of valuable guidance to assist the customer/process.

George, the sales consultant, gave us clear and concise information about our new home. He is friendly yet professional. He completed the tender process; we are now in the pre-construction stage, and Anita is our project manager. She is giving us every single piece of information if we need. We had a fantastic experience working with Anita Chadban as our Project Coordinator at McDonald Jones Homes. less stressful.

Anita was knowledgeable, organised, and genuinely supportive throughout our pre-construction journey. I'll admit I was probably one of those customers who called or emailed more than most, often seeking clarification or reassurance about different parts of the process. Despite that, Anita was always patient, understanding, and happy to answer my questions. She never made me feel like I was being a nuisance, and I truly appreciated how willing she was to take the time to explain things clearly.

Thank you, Anita, for making the experience such a positive one!

Have now had two of our studio appointments and could not be happier! Ben from the Oak Flats office is amazing and really knows his business. I felt very comfortable, confident in my choices being able to have conversations around what would work. I’m actually sad the process is ending soon and the whole team that I have encountered at this office… Read more ·  1

consider future selections before locking in our external choices so we felt everything would flow together.

The selection process is very well planned and we especially appreciated the brief overview Elecia gave us of the next selection appointment. We feel it gives us a springboard of ideas to consider and prepare ahead knowing where we are headed with our vision which takes away the overwhelming feeling of the unknown. We highly recommend Elecia for her knowledge, guidance and professionalism.
