services they offer to assist with better Health Living and ongoing help for issues such as Cancer Recovery and Osteoarthritis is exceptional. They are also affiliated with Kieser Exercise and Rehabilition Programmes which is a science-backed exercise program that specialises in Rehabilitation and muscle and strength conditioning for longevity and good health. Many of the consultants do not appear fully trained, staff phone and leave no messages, and on phoning back the number, you end up in a queue and so on.

A cynical person might think that BUPA did not really care whether it had me as a member or not. I’ve just had a thought. They don’t. They don’t really care whether they lose me as a client or not from what I experienced.

Such was my frustration I decided to look around for an alternative health fund.

I happened across a review for Phoenix Health on Forbes Adviser where Phoenix got fantastic reviews. I contacted Lisa H one of its customer service representatives.

What a complete contrast in customer support to BUPA. The difference has been chalk and cheese and I cannot thank Lisa enough for her patient generosity in walking me through what is, as many of you know, a very difficult decision to make namely changing health funds. It really shouldn’t be this difficult, but it is, and if it was not for Lisa, I would probably still be pulling my hair out dealing with BUPA while waiting on the phone.

Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating and I have yet to use the services of Phoenix Health, but I was reassured to find out that I have in a way gone full circle returning to a not-for-profit friendly society similar to one I dealt with many years ago, which I recall was eventually gobbled up by BUPA, rather than the health fund juggernaut BUPA has become.

This is what I know so far but all care and no responsibility:

• Phoenix returns more to the customer than BUPA for many services. On one plan I contemplated using you get back 60% of the charged item under the extras category up to your annual limit • the ambulance cover is more complete but on that I'm not fully clear why it is that BUPA wouldn't cover fully • there are no restrictions on which practitioner you can visit, so you choose who you want to see. • Phoenix does not have a list of preferred providers such as BUPA dental or BUPA optical • Phoenix does however medical professionals it has formed a business relationship with, in an attempt to cap costs • Phoenix is not-for-profit which on its own doesn’t mean all that much but hopefully time will show that it is not greedy for profit and cares for its members’ welfare • the cost per month is at least comparable with BUPA if not better

If Phoenix Health’s service is anything like the support I received from Lisa H I will be recommending people to join up.

Before completing my first year, I needed a right shoulder reconstruction due to an injury. After providing the necessary medical documentation, they approved the claim without any fuss.

The staff are professional, highly informed about the Phoenix policies, and reply promptly to all email enquiries.

As an aside, I was abroad for almost eighteen months. Phoenix Health Fund will put your policy on hold for up to two years, and will restart it without any penalties, once you prove you have returned to Australia.

There's more I could say about Phoenix Health Fund, but I'll leave it here, only to say I am secure in the knowledge that they will look after my claims when the time comes. I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a genuinely caring health fund (rare!).

We were thinking of increasing our level of extras cover which would have cost more. Phoenix gave us independent advice so that we could see what suited us. I spoke to them to today to allow the member to purchase the product of their choosing . I was like talking to the wall totally intransigent. you are told these are the rules and take it or leave it. so I ended up paying double the price for a identical article that amazon was selling. Through phoenix I was able to access the Diabetes First Program. During the intake for it I discovered i had type 2 diabetes, I was previously pre-diabetic. Through the program i had access to a Dr, nurses, dietician and diabetes education. I also got free lite n easy meals for one month and a glucose monitor.
