apartment. Based on Dyson's recommendation, we purchased the V8 Extra expecting the quality and reliability associated with a premium brand.
Unfortunately, it has been nothing but a disappointment from day one.
The battery would only run for around 10 minutes on the normal power setting, which wasn't even enough to vacuum a very small apartment. The machine was only used about once a week and often sat unused for weeks while my daughter travelled for work, so it certainly wasn't subjected to heavy use.
We contacted Dyson on numerous occasions. We even offered to pay the difference to upgrade to another model, but that request was refused. Instead, we were sent a replacement battery, which only improved the performance for a short time before exactly the same problem returned.
Eventually Dyson replaced the machine, but only after concluding that the original was beyond economical repair due to its "maintenance history"—a conclusion I do not accept given the very light use and the fact that the battery issue existed from early in the vacuum's life.
While I appreciate that Dyson ultimately supplied a replacement with a new warranty, the overall customer service experience was disappointing. For a product costing $499, I expected far greater reliability and a more customer-focused approach to resolving the issue.
Based on my experience, I would think very carefully before paying a premium for the Dyson brand again.

of garbage. We paid $1 ,100 for this machine five years ago, expecting top-tier engineering for my 100-year-old mother. Instead, we got a headache.
In five short years the following has happened: the battery required replacement. However, because the serial number is not visible on the original battery, the company has refused to honor the warranty or provide any form of assistance. Also, the trigger snapped and had to be replaced (known fault of this model), the red seal on the dust bin fell out and broke and now the motor has completely died (also seems like a fault in design). When I called Dyson to ask how a $1100 vacuum fails this catastrophically, their "solution" was to tell me the entire body needs replacing (not just the motor - Alibaba $100) for another $300 but would give it to me for $200. This lack of support is extremely disappointing. The offshore call centre could not give a d#mn.
This is the third Dyson I have owned, and it is the third Dyson to end up in the bin. The build quality is abysmal, and the customer service is a joke. I’m done being fooled by the marketing—I will never buy another Dyson product again. Save your money and buy a brand that actually values durability.

EXPENSIVE LUXURY I purchased this model even though it wasn't the newest model as the reveiws I read were better than other models. The reason I… Read more
purchased it was I was sick of lugging heavy vacuum cleaner around and wanted a quick and easy way to clean up my rooms when I didn't have a lot of time to spare
What I like is that is the ease of just grabbing the cleaner no cords or dragging a heavy vacuum around and it is really good at picking up pet fur, nothing gets caught around the head, so it remains clean at all times. The swivel head makes it easy to maneuver and there is a charging doc we have attached to the wall so the vacuum is always charged, but unfortunately there are more negatives that positives to owning one of these types of vacuums
what could be better is,
There are different connections for each for floor and carpet, not easy to pull each attachment off and unless you place on the corner attachment nothing will be picked up so a lot of time is wasted swapping the attachments over each time you see a crumb
The head has been set up so nothing wraps around it, but it will also not pick up any larger bits on your floor
An example of this is I smashed a glass on tiles, and I tried to use the Dyson to clean it up and the head would not pick up the pieces very well, I could hear the glass just going around in circles in the head so it appears only really good for pet hair or any dust.
The vacuum does get heavy after a while and as you need to pull the trigger your finger becomes sore, so I'm always swapping hands
If you have a large house the battery may not last for the whole clean
Over all I would not get rid of my usual plug-in floor vacuum
There is a place for the Dyson in your home for ease during those times you are having unexpected guests and need a quick fix but won't help if you have a real mess to clean up

Harvey Norman. The new vacuum was fine at first, but within 6 months the stick started to fall apart, which affected the suction. I wrote to LG customer service and they maintained that based on the photos it was not deemed to be a manufacturer fault and that my only option was to take it to an authorised service centre to be inspected (at my own cost) and a report prepared. If the report concluded it was a manufacturer fault I would be reimbursed, otherwise I would bear the cost of inspection. It’s clear based on the photos that it’s a manufacturer fault, and based on the reviews here it’s not the only one. Won’t be buying LG again - in my view the quality has significantly diminished in the last 10 years. I’ve reported LG to NSW Fair Trading (who were unable to elicit a response from LG) and to the ACCC for failure to abide by the ACL. I am considering taking LG to the NCAT. It’s particularly disappointing from LG as all I wanted was a replacement stick, which is $55 online with free shipping.

HyperStretch design is actually wild.
It slides under the couch, under the TV unit, all the spots I usually pretend don’t exist. It vacuums and mops at the same time which, with a toddler in the house, is basically essential.
The iLoop sensor does its thing and adjusts the power automatically depending on the mess, so I don’t have to think about anything.
But the best part for me is the self cleaning. I just hit one button and it deep cleans and dries the roller in about five minutes.
No smell, no gross water sitting around, it’s just ready to go again. If you’ve got hard floors, kids, pets or just chaos in your house like me, this is actually such a good all in one cleaner. It does exactly what it says and saves me so much time.

I have a dog and a daughter with long hair, so was excited by the advertisement of hair not looping around the rollers. It is true, the hair doesn't loop, but it has to go somewhere and gets clogged in the tube as a huge hair snake.
This vacuum is not great if you have stairs. You can't easily use it on the stairs due to it being heavy, and as soon as the foot locks into a straight position, the suction turns off. You need to use the handheld head to do stairs, so a bit of mucking around changing attachments there.
The batteries have become extremely hard to get off the machine. My very strong husband has to use all his strength to push the release button in.
The filter gets clogged very easily. We cleaned it as per the Shark recommendations but it now has a loud high pitched noise. I took it back to Harvey Norman and was told that the motor is not getting enough air flow because I vacuum up pet hair! The whole reason I bought this model was because it is promoted as being great for pet hair. Even has 'Pet Pro' in the name.

We have found it to be an excellent machine - easy to use and an efficient cleaner with a good assortment of attachments. We have found that the dust container requires frequent emptying (I thing that most cordless stick vacuums have the same problem). The biggest disappointment with this product is the battery itself. The battery is displaying signs of extreme rigor mortis and, despite the fact that this model is still on the market as a current model, we have been unable to procure a replacement battery (either genuine or generic). As I have previously stated, we really like this machine, so we have actually purchased another identical machine. Even though the product is genuinely registered directly to my personal Samsung account portal, the frontline support team completely stonewalled my claim. Because the vacuum was originally received as a gift, they refused to issue a cost-covered Service Job Number for an official assessment at Southside Electronics.Worse still, they tried to dismiss my official product registration as a mere marketing tool for "better deals" rather than a legal record of ownership. When I requested a simple copy of the chat transcript for my records, they claimed I had to fill out a complex legal "Privacy Access Request Form" just to receive it.Under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), a manufacturer’s warranty expiration does not wipe out consumer guarantees for premium, expensive appliances, and gift recipients carry identical rights. Frontline staff are clearly trained to play bureaucratic games to shift assessment fees onto the consumer and avoid their ACL responsibilities.

Should I get a stick vacuum?
Stick vacuums are great for whipping out when you make a small mess, and depending on the person, can make vacuuming seem like less of a chore, but is it the right match for you and your household?
What should I look for when buying a cordless or stick vacuum?
Corded vs. cordless stick vacuums
Cordless stick vacuum cleaners need to charge after use. These vacuums offer convenience and the ability to use your vacuum anywhere you desire to.
Cordless vacuums are lighter than corded ones, so you can use them for cleaning anything from nooks and crannies to cars. They’re also easier to store, making them great for people with limited space.
Corded stick vacuums are electric-powered, which means that they include a cord that connects the vacuum to a power outlet. Corded vacuums are cheaper than cordless, but the dependence on a connection to a power outlet restricts mobility.
A main advantage of a corded model is that they tend to be more effective on heavy carpet than cordless vacuums.
Features
There are a variety of features that can make your vacuum easier to use and more effective at its job.
- 2-in-1: Some stick vacuum cleaners can convert to a handheld vacuum.
- Variable suction: This lets you adjust the suction, so that you can clean delicate things that need less suction, such as curtains and cushions.
- Boost: When activated, a boost function provides extra suction power so that you can clean particularly dusty and dirty spots.
- Smart technology: As seen on the Tineco Pure One S12 Platinum, smart technology on a vacuum can do anything from connect to your phone so you can keep track of your cleaning, to automatically adjust suction power when it detects dust.
- LED display: Common in smart vacuums, an LED display can let you see the battery level, suction power, how much dust has been collected, and can even tell you what’s gone wrong if your vacuum is malfunctioning.
- Wet and dry: Some models can also vacuum liquids and other wet material. However, they can usually only suck up a small amount, and the bin and filter generally need to be cleaned separately.
- Wall mountable charger: A wall-mounted base can make your vacuum easy to access while keeping it fully charged.
Filter type
There are 2 main types of filters found in vacuum cleaners:
Micro filters
These are washable or disposable filters that are found in many more basic vacuums. They release dust particles back into the air, so they’re generally not very well-suited to households with people that have asthma or allergies.
HEPA filter
Vacuuming stirs up the dust and debris, so if you find that vacuuming triggers any allergies or conditions like asthma, a HEPA filter can help provide some relief.
A HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter traps fine particles, including dust and mould spores, so the exhaust air coming from your vacuum will be much cleaner. Premium vacuum cleaners will have a multi-layer filtration system to ensure that no allergens are left behind.
The Xiaomi Dreame V9 and the Wertheim Evolution Handstick W7301 both have HEPA filters.
Attachments
Stick vacuums usually come with a standard head that suits both carpeted and hard floors. Many will come with (or separately sell) extra attachments that make it easier to clean different surfaces. A soft head is ideal for hard floors, such as tiles and floorboards.
Some attachments also come with shorter (or no) sticks, so that you can easily clean upholstery and surfaces other than the floor. An angled head is another useful accessory for vacuuming dust on high shelves and furniture.
Pet vacuums
Some vacuum cleaners are marketed as ‘pet’ or ‘animal’ vacuums. These have powerful suction that gets deep into both low and high-pile carpets to pick up pet hairs from around your home and car.
If you have a long-haired furry friend, look for a rotating, motorised brush head that hair won’t get tangled around.
The Dyson V8 Animal is a pet vacuum that has whole-machine filtration, capturing allergens and expelling cleaner air.
Ease of use
Check how lightweight a vacuum is. If you can handle it in store, then try it out to see how easy it is to manoeuvre across both hard surfaces and carpet (if you expect to be using it on soft surfaces).
Some people use their vacuums to clean ceilings, fans, and upholstery, so if this is the case for you, try to find a model that’s not too tiring to use for these different surfaces.
Bin capacity
The larger the bin capacity, the less often you need to empty it. Consistently stopping to empty the bin can be bothersome, especially with a spacious apartment or house. Bin capacity usually ranges from 0.4L to 1.9L.
The longevity of a bin capacity will depend on the house size and how dirty the area is. A modest-sized room might seem as though it would require a large storage amount, but if the room has been left untouched for a while, a generous amount of bin storage will be required.
Running time
Running out of battery mid-clean is frustrating, so if you have a large home, choose one with a longer run time, such as Xiaomi vacuums, which boast up to 90 minutes of running time. Dyson stick vacuums usually provide a running time of 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the model.
It’s also quite common for vacuums to have shorter run times, usually up to 15 or 20 minutes. This may be more of an issue if you have a large space to vacuum, however you can also find models that let you swap out for a spare battery so you don’t need to stop mid-clean.
Check the charging time
Reading reviews will help determine whether the battery life will be suitable for your home, and to research how long it takes for a vacuum to recharge – you might be surprised. For instance, a vacuum cleaner with only 10 minutes of running time could have an unexpectedly rapid charging time that makes the device worth buying.
Keep in mind that the longer the running time, the longer the charge will probably have to be.
Are stick vacuums worth it?
Stick and cordless vacuum cleaners can cost anywhere from $29 to $1400 and more. A cheap stick vacuum may not come with all the bells and whistles, but that doesn’t mean it can’t do the job. This Kmart stick vacuum has received a plenty of positive reviews, and costs only $29.
When considering price, make sure you also factor in the warranty of a product. Short 1 or 2-year warranties may mean you’ll end up having to fork out for a whole new vacuum cleaner not that long after buying a new one should anything go wrong.
Investing in a stick vacuum can definitely be worthwhile if you want the ease of use and versatility of a cordless cleaner. Just make sure that you think about what you need to clean, and find a model that suits your preferences.
