time to understand exactly what I was hoping to achieve and went above and beyond to deliver a clean, seamless installation.

One of my biggest concerns was keeping the wiring and transformer hidden to maintain a minimalist aesthetic. Harry and Isaac found a solution by concealing the transformer within the wall cavity, and the end result exceeded my expectations. Their attention to detail and pride in their workmanship were evident throughout the entire job.

Thank you, Harry and Isaac, for your outstanding work. It’s rare to come across tradespeople who care as much about the final result as their customers do. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Local Electrician to anyone looking for quality workmanship and exceptional service.

installed on the side of my house and explained in detail to the telephone receptionist the circumstances of my request and asked if there would be a call-out fee. Was assured this would only be charged if the work could be undertaken and I decided not to go ahead with it. When the polite electrician arrived, he did a quick review and ascertained my request was not possible — he was kind enough to try and get me out of having to pay the call-out fee (which was the fault of the telephone receptionist); but this was not possible and he was sent back to get money for a job that was not possible. Do not book-in unless you explain in assertive detail exactly what you want, and you have absolute clarity and assurances that they won’t charge you fees unless the quote you request is *actually* possible to achieve. They will throw all sorts of excuses at you; hurl them right back until you get a written assurance via e-mail that they will not charge you unless the quote is possible, achievable, and reasonable. Clearly they make money out of ripping people off like this.

Avoid Watts Up Solar and Electrical at all costs. Our experience was nothing short of a nightmare. From the beginning, communication was poor,… Read more

deadlines were missed, and we were constantly chasing updates with little to no response. What was promised during the sales process was very different from what was actually delivered.

The level of professionalism was extremely disappointing. Issues that should have been resolved quickly were ignored or dragged out, leaving us frustrated and out of pocket. Rather than taking responsibility and providing solutions, it felt like we were being brushed aside once the contract was signed.

The workmanship and customer service fell well below an acceptable standard. We expected honesty, reliability, and support for a major investment, but instead experienced delays, excuses, and a complete lack of accountability.

Looking back, choosing Watts Up Solar and Electrical was a costly mistake. We would never use them again and strongly caution anyone considering their services to do extensive research before signing anything. There are far better companies out there that actually value their customers and stand behind their work.

What do electricians do?

electrician

Electricians undertake a range of tasks, including diagnosing faults, practical tasks, and restoring electrical connections. Read on to find out more about the different types of specialised services provided by electricians - that cater to different needs.

Lighting

Electricians can install anything from a humble lightbulb to fancier, more complicated light fixtures such as LED lights, downlights and sensor lights. Changing a lightbulb is as simple as taking the old light bulb out of the socket and replacing it with a new one. Alternatively, light installations need to be hard-wired into the ceiling and connected to a light switch.

Alarm installation

If you’re often away from home and worried about potential break-ins, employing a licensed electrician to install a safety system can bring about peace of mind. Electricians are also able to install hard-wired smoke detectors, which are twice as reliable as battery-only detectors as they have two sources of power. Hard-wired smoke detectors are connected directly to the power mains in the house and also have a back-up battery source.

Rewiring

Sparking outlets, buzzing sounds coming from the walls, and constant blown fuses are all signs that your house may need rewiring. Additionally, if your house hasn’t been rewired for the past few decades, an inspection by a licensed electrician can ensure your electric connection is safe and working as it should be.

Cabling

If you prefer to do things old school, hiring an electrician to install cabling can take the burden off your shoulders. From installing telephone and data cabling to broadband and Foxtel cabling, electricians can turn a complex job into a breeze.

Emergency electrical services

You can hire an emergency electrician to assist with services such as attending to a power outage or exposed wiring. In emergency situations, it’s best not to wait. Although there may be an added emergency fee, the damage could far increase and in the long run, result in further costs. For example, not attending to exposed or damaged electrical wiring could result in a fire being started.

DIY electrical work: what can I do without a license?

Saving some cash with DIY electrical work might sound appealing but in reality, there’s limited work you can do without a license. If it’s anything other than changing a lightbulb, assume that it’s not safe to attempt - especially if it involves handling wiring.

Doing electrical work without a license, such as changing an outlet or a light fixture is also dangerous and illegal. Worst case scenario, you’ll be hit with a hefty fine or even imprisonment if your work results in the harm or death of others.

If you’ve previously worked as an electrician and feel you have the knowledge to do DIY work in your home, then you could possibly do your minor electrical work around the house - but this comes with the disclaimer that there may be safety regulations and insurance issues around doing so.

How does an electrician become qualified?

Ultimately, hiring a local electrician will benefit you more than your non-qualified but well-intentioned uncle who offers to help will.

Becoming a licensed electrician usually involves completing a TAFE course, plus years of on the job training - which is in the form of a four-year apprenticeship.

After a fledgling electrician has completed an apprenticeship there are different levels that electricians work up to - meaning they become qualified to do different types of work. A level 1 is an electrician who has completed an apprenticeship and has a limited amount of experience.

A level 2 electrician has more experience than a level 1 electrician and can be trusted to complete a variety of tasks, including meter installation, and disconnecting and connecting a power supply. A level 3 electrician is the most advanced type of electrician and is also referred to as a master electrician.

How do I choose an electrician?

Seek referrals from friends and family and read through reviews to ensure that your electrician is qualified, experienced and insured. Shop around a little and seek quotes from various companies to get an idea of electricians prices and rates - but be aware that to get a proper grasp of how much a job will cost, some companies will need to send out electricians to assess the situation first before to provide a thorough quote.

There are also different types of electrical companies and types of electricians. For your electrical repairs to your home, you’ll be seeking a residential electrician. You might come across other types of electricians called commercial electricians, but this type of electrician isn’t suitable for the home.

A commercial electrician is pretty similar to a residential electrician, similar tasks are carried out except in a commercial setting (offices, shopping centres), instead of homes.

How much do electricians charge per hour?

The cost varies depending on the service and the area that you live in. On average, you can expect to be charged around $60-$100 an hour. The price will be bumped up for emergency and after-hours call-outs.

Emergency call-out fees can reach up to double the amount of a standard call-out fee and if an electrician advertises a $0 emergency fee, it usually means there’s a higher hourly rate.

Commonly asked questions:

Why are electricians so expensive?

Electricians charge prices that many may find to be expensive because they do dangerous work that not just anyone can do, and they receive wages to reflect the fact that they provided a skilled service. Even for the most qualified electricians, there is still the potential for harm.

For example, there is always a risk of electrocution. Electricians go through risks so that you don’t have to. Essentially, being an electrician is dangerous, and the price they charge reflects this.

What tools do electricians use?

Electricians come with an arsenal of tools so that they are prepared for whatever job they encounter. Same basic tools that an electrician will carry around with them include wire strippers, wrench set, hammer, and tape set.
