beyond that timeframe with no clear update on the status of my order.

I was provided with a tracking number, however the tracking information cannot be located, leaving me with no idea where my order is or when it will arrive. I have called multiple times seeking an update, but my calls have gone unanswered.

I had a specific timeframe for this installation to be completed, and the lack of communication has been extremely frustrating. Good customer service is about keeping customers informed, especially when delays occur.

Based on my experience, I would recommend being cautious before purchasing. Delays can happen, but poor communication and lack of updates are unacceptable.

Unfortunately, my overall experience with Veneta Blinds was extremely disappointing. I'll start with the positive: the sales representative I dealt… Read more

with was polite and professional throughout the process. Unfortunately, that was the only positive aspect of my experience.

The blinds were supplied with outdated installation instructions, which resulted in damage to my wall during installation. The chain supplied was also far longer than necessary and, in my opinion, creates an unnecessary safety risk.

After contacting customer support, I was sent a replacement chain mechanism. However, despite being told installation instructions would be included, the replacement arrived without any instructions at all. I was left to work it out myself, and after installing the replacement, the blind no longer functions. I seem to have spent far more time troubleshooting a brand new product than anyone should have to, and ultimately had to request a full refund because I completely lost confidence in both the product and the support but this was not acknowledged at all.

It's disappointing because the experience started well but the quality of the product, inaccurate documentation, and poor follow-through from the tech support team completely overshadowed that. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend Veneta Blinds.

White Venetian blinds letting in light into a home office.

What is the difference between blinds and shutters?

With the terms often used interchangeably, it’s easy to get confused between the two - but the main difference between blinds and shutters is how they’re fitted to a window.

Blinds are attached above or to the inside of the window recess. They’re more popular than shutters as they’re widely available and more affordable.

Pros
Wide variety of styles and designs available, so easier to find some that suit your home.
Affordable.
Can be made in a range of materials suited for all room and window types.
Easily adjustable to give you as much light or shade that you want.
Have options for blackout and insulation, giving you more control over conditions in your room or home.
Cons
Not as hard-wearing as shutters so will need more frequent repair or replacement.
Need more cleaning and maintenance than shutters.
Some fabric blinds can be damaged by UV rays or excess moisture.

Shutters are fitted to the window frame itself, giving them a more sturdy structure.

Pros
Hard-wearing, as they’re attached to the frame.
Don’t require cords or chains, so are kid-friendly.
Low maintenance.
Provide excellent insulation.
Available in a variety of materials, including PVC, wood, and faux wood.
Different sections can be operated independently, giving you a lot of control over light, privacy, and ventilation.
Cons
More expensive than blinds.
Take up more window space as they’re attached to the frame rather than in the recess.
Can be heavy, and therefore unsuitable for some types of windows.
Trickier and more time-consuming to install.
May not be an option for renters, as you'd likely need permission from the homeowner.

Types of blinds and shutters

With so many types of shutters and blinds on the market, it’s useful to know a bit about all of them before you start shopping.

Venetian blinds

These are probably what comes to mind when you think of conventional blinds. Venetian blinds have horizontal slats that can be tilted with a wand and raised or lowered with a cord. They’re easy to adjust, making them great for controlling the level of privacy and light you want to let in.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds, or Holland blinds, are blinds where the fabric is rolled horizontally around a casing that’s attached above the window, usually on the window frame. They’re simple to roll up and down, making them practical for windows that are used frequently, such as sliding doors.

These window blinds have a more contemporary, sleek look to them, which is why they tend to suit the homes of those with a preference for more modern decor.

Honeycomb blinds

Used all around the house, honeycomb blinds, also referred to as cellular blinds, have horizontal rows of air pockets which help retain heat during colder months and keep it out in the summer. This might mean more savings for you if it results in spending less on heating and air conditioning.

Plantation shutters

Plantation shutters have louvers or slats fixed to the window frame, and are available in different widths to suit windows of all sizes. When they’re open, they let in a lot of natural light and air, but when closed, they provide complete privacy.

These window shutters can be bought in a range of colours, designs, and materials to suit any kind of home, however aluminium is often used for its strength, rust resistance, and easy maintenance.

Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds are practical, affordable, and are used as sliding door blinds because they enable easy access - but they’re also commonly used for windows in both homes and office spaces. They’re also simple to customise to fit over almost any window size.

Blackout blinds

With the ability to block out up to 100% of light in a room, blackout or blockout blinds are fabric shades that are often chosen for bedrooms, home theatres, and any room that’s exposed to a lot of heat. However, they’re usually more pricey than other blind types.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds have wide pleats that fold flat when you raise them using a cord, and are popular in lounge and dining areas, as they look a little more dressy than other blind types.

Other types of blinds

  • Zebra blinds: Zebra blinds are a type of roller blind that’s made of fabric alternating between bands of blackout fabric and translucent bands. These are double-layered, letting you control the amount of lighting and privacy you want depending on how you align the bands.
  • Sunscreen blinds: These are roller blinds that are made of a mesh fabric that lets in lots of natural light while still protecting you from the glare and rays of the sun.
  • Awnings: This is a sheet of material that’s fixed to the exterior of your home, usually above a door or window. Many blind and shutter shops will also sell these.
  • Motorised blinds: You can also find motorised versions of a lot of blinds and shutters on the market. These electric blinds open and close quietly with just the touch of a button. They're particularly useful for those with mobility issues who may have difficulty manually adjusting their blinds constantly.

Other things to consider when you shop

Your window type

Different blind and shutter styles open and close in different ways, which is why the blinds and shutters that will be well-suited to you will likely be limited by the type of window you’re shopping for. For example, those with a sliding door often opt for roller blinds, as they’re easy to use and roll up.

You should also consider how easy it is to access the cord or wand that controls the blinds or shutters - a higher up window may need a longer cord than usual.

Whip the tape measure out

Knowing the sizes of your windows will help ensure you take home a product that’s fit for your home. Measure where you want the blind or shutter to be, so if you’re looking for inside-mount blinds, don’t include the window frame in your measurements - and vice versa.

Go to any blinds shop you visit with measurements ready so that sales staff can better help you sift through their wares.

Material

The materials that are suitable for your windows often depend on what type of room the window is in and where it’s situated.

For example, kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms all get a lot of moisture, so you should look at materials and fabrics that suit this. PVC Venetian blinds and aluminium blinds are more water-resistant and thus better suited to these rooms compared to fabric blinds or timber Venetian blinds.

Ask when you shop; retailers often sell blinds that are specifically designed for these “wet” zones.

Outdoor blinds

If you want to minimise the amount of light getting in, you may want to consider outdoor-mounted blinds. This is because streams of light often come in on either side of indoor blinds due to the space required to accommodate brackets.

These external blinds offer better insulation and privacy, but unless you install automatic blinds that you can set to open and close at the same time each day, you’ll have to go outside to close them.

For an exterior space, such as a deck, you can also find patio blinds or outdoor roller blinds to provide some extra shade. Cafe blinds, which are translucent, are also used for patios where people want light and protection from the elements.

Privacy and light control

Depending on your own personal preferences on light and privacy and the position of your room, you may want to consider getting blinds or shutters that address your specific needs.

Fabric blockout blinds are popular with bedrooms, as they help ensure you have a dark room to get a good night’s sleep in.

Safety

If you’ve got kids running around, you might want to consider cordless blind options, as cords are a strangulation hazard.

Cleaning and maintenance

Blinds and shutters can attract a lot of dust. If you opt for fabric shades, then you may also need to lightly vacuum or spot clean the material from time to time.

Ask the salesperson exactly what maintenance is needed for the blinds or shutters you’re considering. Some materials are prone to degradation - wooden blinds, for example, will rot over time when exposed to water.

How much do blinds cost?

The cost of your blinds or shutters will depend on what you choose and how much window space you want to cover. Have a budget ready so that a salesperson doesn’t unnecessarily show you options that you don’t want to splurge on.

Blinds and shutters aren’t small purchases - it’s a good idea to get at least a 2-year warranty for extra peace of mind.

The bottom line

Whether you’re shopping in-store or buying blinds online, knowing what to look for can help you find the right window shades that are easy to use, give you the level of light and privacy you want, and enhance the style of your home.
